Beamdog adds PC & tablet cross-play to the classic board game

Video game developer Beamdog just launched the full release of Axis & Allies 1942 Online to Steam and GOG, with full cross-play support for iPadOS, Android tablets, Windows, macOS, and Linux. The digital version of Hasbro’s classic strategy board game is available now for $19.99 USD from Steam and GOG.com, and for $9.99 USD from the Google Play Store and the App Store.    “One of the benefits of owning a games studio is you get to make games that you want to play. Axis & Allies 1942 Online started as a passion project— I’m a huge fan of the board game, and the fact that I can get games going again with friends who live across the world is the most exciting concept to me,” said Trent Oster, Beamdog CEO.   Originally released to Steam Early Access in July 2019, Axis & Allies 1942 Online is an official digital adaptation of Avalon Hill’s tabletop classic, Axis & Allies 1942 Second Edition— a turn-based strategy game in which players act as World War II powers on either side of the conflict: the United States, United Kingdom, and Soviet Union form the Allies, while Germany and Japan make up the Axis.    In July 2021, Beamdog overhauled the game’s user interface based on Early Access feedback, adding new visuals and controls, as well as additional tools to support players learning the game.   “Simplifying the user interface was our biggest challenge, and we went through a few misses before we hit on our final design,” said Oster. “Even before our early access launch, this game went through tons of iterations.”   Interface Progression (Old Screenshots):
“Once we launched it into the wild, we let player feedback guide us, focusing on fixing bugs, polishing gameplay, and adding requested features like competitive seasons, player profiles and new dice modes,” said Oster. “Ultimately, we took a complex game and kept the depth, while creating a fantastic experience for new players across multiple platforms,”

Oster confirmed that PC and tablet accounts sync across devices, so players can switch between platforms to take turns, view their statistics, and create games. Multiplayer is similarly cross-platform, so custom games and ranked matchmaking can include players on Android, iPadOS, Windows, macOS or Linux operating systems.

Axis & Allies 1942 Online is available in eight languages, including English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian, and Brazilian Portuguese. These languages are in-game now on Steam, GOG.com, the Google Play Store, and the App Store.
