Call of Duty League Changes Course; Dallas Empire Expect More Rivalry Moments with Shift to Tournament Style Weekend Series

Exactly one month from opening weekend of the 2020 Call of Duty League season, league officials are announcing sweeping changes to the regular season schedule and team scoring for the esports league’s inaugural season. Each of the 12 global teams selected for the Call of Duty League will now host a signature weekend home series that features tournament-style scoring, with more visiting teams in attendance at each event and more live matches played in front of arena audiences. The move distances the Call of Duty League format from other professional esports leagues that focus on home and away travel for participating teams.

For the Dallas Empire, the move to a tournament scoring means each match matters in 2020, as points accumulate throughout the season to dictate playoff seedings. North Texas will get its first look at live Call of Duty League matches March 28-29, 2020, when the Dallas Empire host a multi-day weekend series of professional league matches and an amateurs tournament at Toyota Music Factory. Tickets to the Dallas Empire Call of Duty League Weekend Series start as low as $39 per day with upgrades and VIP packages available.

“Having been part of Call of Duty esports for 13 years, it’s exciting to have tournaments brought back for the 2020 season – we’ve seen firsthand the excitement, the drama, the competition, and the rivalries that this style of play brings to Call of Duty esports,” said Mike Rufail, owner of the Dallas Empire and CEO at Envy Gaming, Inc. “What is important to me in the first year of the Call of Duty League is bringing fans the best matchups and most intense moments at every single event, all season long. For our Dallas Empire fans this means more teams, more matches at our event and more drama. Every tournament on tour will have a climax.”

Fans of Call of Duty have avidly attended multi-day tournaments that culminate in an event champion in major cities across the globe for a number of years. Recently, both Dallas and Fort Worth hosted these type of rotating Call of Duty tournaments. As esports move to a franchised league structure that more closely mirrors traditional sports with teams based in their home markets, the Call of Duty League had interest in maintaining a competitive format that delivered big moments to fans week in and week out.

“This is the best possible scenario for Call of Duty esports. The Call of Duty League is showing it is capable of taking community feedback and making a positive change,” said Rufail.

Dallas-based Envy Gaming, which owns and operates the Dallas Empire team in the Call of Duty League, is the only organization to ever appear in four Call of Duty esports championships.

The Dallas Empire start their season on the road, traveling to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Call of Duty League Launch Weekend held January 24-26, 2020.
