“Clever, complex and exuberantly macabre” detective game The Case of the Golden Idol delights critics and fans alike as game releases worldwide

Following the rapturous response to its NextFest demo that dumbfounded and delighted thousands of players around the world, and hot on the heels of its glowing review in EDGE Magazine, publisher Playstack is delighted to release The Case of the Golden Idol worldwide today, October 13, across Steam, GOG, and Green Man Gaming.

The game’s first ever review, published in games bible EDGE Magazine, scored the game an “excellent” 8, describing developer Color Gray’s whimsical whodunnit as “clever, complex and exuberantly macabre.”

The review added: “If you have a dark sense of humour, this can be an extremely funny game at times.”

A new kind of puzzle game that allows players to carry out detective work in a fresh and non-linear fashion has been a surprise hit amongst media, players, and even fellow developers from Lucas Pope (The Return of the Obra Dinn, Papers Please) to Erik Wolpaw (Portal, Portal 2). “I felt like both an idiot and a genius” – Erik Wolpaw, Portal

“Loved every minute of the demo” – Lucas Pope, The Return of the Obra Dinn
“Absolutely nails detective investigation” – Julian Colbus, Lacuna

“Well made, clever, fantastic style” – Sean Vanaman, Firewatch

The Case of the Golden Idol is a narrative detective game set in an alternate 18th-century England where players must investigate 12 most strange and gruesome deaths spanning forty years. Something awful connects these tragedies, providing a wider mystery for the player to unravel. Each case is presented as a snapshot scene frozen in time. Players can freely search through these scenes in whichever fashion they choose to deduce the suspect, motive, and chronology of events. The player’s theory is then placed into an interactive notepad, which in turn will inform the player whether their theory is correct or not.
