Danganronpa 1 & 2 Reload Review :- The Danganronpa series is an amazing thriller gaming series based on the premise that some high schoolers get stranded on different locations in each part of the game. In the first game of the series they are made captive in a school, while in the second they are held captive on a tropical island. They are then asked to kill a member of their group without being caught by others if they want to be free. If one of them manages to kill a group member without coming under the suspicion he/she is set free while the others are executed. But, if he/she gets caught, then the punishment is death.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and the Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair are the two main games that are part of the Danganronpa 1 & 2 Reload collection. These games were earlier released on PSP and PlayStation Vita and are now being released as the part of a collection on PlayStation 4.

Trigger Happy Havoc revolves around the story of fifteen students who are made a captive on Peak Academy. None of them remembers how it happened but are introduced to a teddy bear, Monokuma, who tells them the rules of the killing game. At first, all the students decide that being together and figuring a way out is the best policy. But later on, a person is killed and you have to figure out who have killed him/her.

The game is divided into different gameplay sections. It starts with the presentation of a visual novel and will keep you engaged with the character introductions and plot development. After the murder, the game transforms into the investigation mode where you have to investigate the crime scene for clues. After the investigation, the game moves on to a class trial where Monokuma will make the final decision but the students have to find a consensus about who is the culprit.

Unlike the common visual novel games which get boring very often, Danganronpa, with its interactive sessions, gives you a sense of pacing that will keep you engaged till the end. The murder mysteries get overlapped with the mystery of why you are held captive. And the time between killings will let you familiarise with other characters in the story.

The narrative of the game is mind-blowing, thanks to the tightly woven story and amazing characters. The writing style and the voice acting truly brings the characters to life. The character developments are surprising, interesting, as well as layered. The second game is largely similar to the first one in the beginning but the narrative takes huge twists and turns, leaving your head spinning by the end.

The only negative thing about the collection is the jagged visuals which are the resultant of the game’s transition from handheld to the home console. But, both the games have largely the same controls and have similar trophy lists waiting to be collected. Both these games are a bit time consuming and may take up to 25 hours each for the main story mode.

Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair are easily the best murder mystery games for the PS4 right now available in one package. The game may seem slower to some, but once you start getting the feel of the visual novel type storytelling, dark humour and the layered characters and story line, you will begin to love it. This game truly is a 4/5.
