When starting the game, you get to learn the basics of the game through the training mode and get comfortable with all the controls before tackling your first level. You can also practice and get familiarised with the focused shot, screen sweep bombs and the scatter shot. The game also gives you the option to practice for a specific level so that you can figure out a strategy to tackle the level without the fear of getting beaten.

With mere five levels in its arsenal, you may think lowly about the game but you need a lot of trial and error to pass each level successfully. The first level is a treat even for newcomers, but as the game progresses the difficulty of each stage gets higher. The change is swift and the game lets you get familiarised with the new streams which are continuously introduced. And as you reach the final level of the game, you will see the havoc the game has in store for you.

Similar to the older arcade games, Ghost Blade HD gives you three credits which can be used to continue the game in case you run out of lives. But, spend all the credits you have and the game is over. However, the game comes to your rescue if it feels that you are really struggling to pass the levels and give you an extra credit to help you out. You can also change the difficulty level and choose between the legendary easy, normal and hard options we have been seeing since the dawn of time.

You get to die a lot and if you are not lazy or don’t get bored easily, the game will keep you hooked up by making you learn through your mistakes, increasing your skills in return. Tactics and strategy are the focal points of the game and while you can clear the game by using just the fire button, figuring out and employing the most efficient way to win the level does keep things interesting.

You will encounter a boss fight at the end of each level which is basically the fight against a large ship with different firing patterns. You need to figure out these patterns, evade them and then go for the kill. Each of the five boss fights is different but the boss fight at the end of the game will leave you disappointed.

After finishing the game, you can either increase the difficulty of the game and play it again or switch to the score attack mode which is highly addictive. It is best suited for people who love the genre and will keep them engaged for a long time as they will try to be on the top of the leader board. The game also has two player mode, but the game becomes too easy with two ships on one side and puts out the challenge.

Ghost Blade HD has easily made through the tough job of maintaining a balance so that it can be enjoyed by both veterans and newcomers. The gameplay keeps you engaged and pushes you on to find strategies so that you can go and excel the game. The disappointment of two player co-op is overcome by the score attack mode which has the potential to keep players hooked for a long time. This game deserves 4/5.
