Following the conclusion of the Champions League Final, Atalanta’s Alejandro Gómez has emerged as the winner of the Panna d’Or, having completed the most nutmegs in top-flight European football in the 2019/2020 season.

With a tally of 12 nutmegs, Gómez has seen off the likes of Lionel Messi and Marcus Rashford to be crowned this year’s winner. The award caps off a successful season for Gómez, whose team reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time and finished third in Serie A.

The Panna d’Or, or Golden Nutmeg, has been created by arcade sports video game Street Power Football in partnership with StatsBomb, one of Europe’s leading stats agencies. The award has been decided using data tracking nutmegs across Europe’s top leagues and competitions.

Messi staked perhaps the best claim to catching Gómez, sitting on 10 nutmegs ahead of the quarter-finals, though FC Bayern Munich had other designs for FC Barcelona’s progress in the competition.

His compatriot, PSG’s Ángel Di María also features in the top 10 and was one of the few players to increase their tally in the Champions League’s latter stages, registering a nutmeg in the final against FC Bayern Munich, to finish the season on 9 nutmegs.

Now the season has concluded, StatsBomb’s data can reveal the following stats about this season:

  • Total nutmegs across Europe’s top leagues and competitions: 2844
  • Total Champions League nutmegs: 114
  • Total Europa League nutmegs:183
  • Total Premier League nutmegs: 360
