PREVIEW : King of the Hat (PC)

King of the Hat is a two-dimensional action party game for up to four players. Consider your next game night fixed if you’re searching for a fun pick-up and play experience with loved ones locally or online. The game has entered early access, and I have some things to contribute, so let’s get started.

The concept is that it is a little boy’s birthday, which coincidentally happens to be called Birthday. That is not perplexing! In any case, he celebrates his name or birth date by squashing people’s hats. An initial lesson gets you up to speed on the fundamentals, introducing you to this amusing yet stupid notion.

It’s simple to understand, but because the game’s main focus is multiplayer, it could have been preferable to allow numerous players to experience it at once.

Having said that, getting used to the mechanics won’t take long. Each character has a nice hat, and your goal is to stomp on the other player’s hat to score a point while still keeping an eye out for your own. The player with the most points at the end of the round wins. Your hat has its own mind, and you can move it around the level by flicking the right analogue stick, avoiding being squashed and potentially stunning other players.

This increases the risk-reward ratio. Keeping your hat on is more convenient, but it makes you more susceptible. Taking it off adds evasive control, but requires you to maintain track of your character and headgear, which is difficult if you’re bad at multitasking like me. The design is easy to pick up and play, thus it will appeal to all player styles, casual or experienced.

The game’s main focus is local multiplayer for up to four players. You can play with a joystick or a keyboard. If you have any empty player slots, you can replace them with AI opponents of varying difficulty.

. Online multiplayer is also possible, but only through an invitation that uses a code system to attract others to your lobby. At this time, the game does not support matchmaking.

If you don’t have any buddies to play with, the makers have put up a Discord website where you may meet other players and share room codes. Playing with people you know appears to be the superior option, however, I appreciate the devs’ efforts here. Who knows, you might make a new gaming friend this way.

The presentation of the game is well suited to the party game mood. A welcoming pixelated design is suitable for various audiences. There are various colourful colours and hilarious character designs to pick from, including a chubby cat, an old man, and the best figure by far, a sad washing machine. The announcer, who brings their A-game to the experience, is easily the game’s best feature.

Proudly declaring each character as you select them and maintain that positive vibe as you present the following round.

The term ‘Hats On!!’ got so entrenched in my mind that I considered it before beginning a workout outside of the game. My 9-month-old also seemed perplexed when I said it to him, which is a plus in my book.

The multiplayer is the game’s major lure, although there are two single-player options if you prefer to party alone. The first mode is a one-on-one tournament against AI opponents. Like an old-school 2D fighter, you climb the ladder to victory one after the other.

You can choose the AI’s starting difficulty, but the overall difficulty will climb steadily with each opponent. I was blown away by how capable the AI was on medium to hard settings. They usually provide a satisfying challenge by reacting to your activities and keeping you on your toes.

The second mode is a golf simulation. In this game, your hat serves as the golf ball, and you must flick it to the hole within a predetermined par. It’s a fun way to practise moving your hat about, and it’s a nice change of pace from the game’s main mode. It lacks depth, however, and all 18 holes may be accomplished in under an hour.

Oddly, multiplayer isn’t available here, as it doesn’t appear difficult to have players take turns. Whether you play single or multiplayer modes, new game content is released gradually over time. This features new levels and characters, as well as the ability to change the game’s rules. There is plenty of reason to return to this if your audience is pleased with the experience.

King of the Hat makes a good first impression for an early access release. It’s a fun and straightforward party game that comes highly recommended if you’re looking for a new game night experience.

Suitable for players of all skill levels, with a presentation that is sure to make you giggle. It will also generate wonderful memories that you and your family will hopefully treasure for years to come. Modes, as with party games, are somewhat limited. I wish the golf game had more depth, but this may come with time as it progresses through early access. I had a lot of fun with this strange game, and I hope you will as well.
