Skip the grind and hop right into the PvP action on day one!

Seattle-based Power Proc Studios recently launched their crowdfunding campaign for Soul Kingdoms, an upcoming PvP MMO-lite. Soul Kingdoms bridges together the depth and persistence of MMORPGs with the convenience and on-demand nature of match-based games. The campaign will be active until December 18th, and they are seeking to raise $15,000 for their first major development milestone. The campaign is being run on their website and signups for upcoming playtests are available in their Discord.

“We really wanted a game that enabled us to engage in PvP without having to extensively grind other content we had less interest in.” said Chris Mhley, Founder of Power Proc Studios. “We also wanted a game where PvP was the primary focus and not a secondary system like it is in most MMOs. We just felt like we didn’t really have a place to call home, and those were some of the major factors that motivated us to create Soul Kingdoms.”

If you’ve ever wished that you could have MMO PvP as readily available as matches are in games like League of Legends or Overwatch, then Soul Kingdoms should definitely be on your radar. The game aims to encapsulate the core feeling of an MMO via rich character development and a communal Town Hub. Upon starting the game players create their own unique character from a set of classes and unlock new abilities and ways to modify their playstyle while leveling up. The Town Hub brings players together outside of matches and will include an explorable zone with areas for harvesting, crafting and trading, minigames, and dueling. Meanwhile, the core gameplay will take place in various instanced battlegrounds.
There will be larger scale game modes that are more casual and fighting-focused, as well as smaller, more competitive battlegrounds that focus on strategy. The first ranked game mode will be a 6v6 battleground, although the team plans to experiment with a spin on the traditional arena formula as well. The game is designed so that anyone can play with their friends regardless of level disparity. There will be little to no time investment required to start playing. Soul Kingdoms is targeted for release on Steam Early Access by the end of 2022.

Power Proc’s development strategy is to start with a much smaller scope, which will enable them to get the game into players’ hands as quickly as possible. The Early Access version will initially have a smaller core set of features, and from there the team will expand the game’s content over time. Although Soul Kingdoms will initially feature pure PvP game modes, PvPvE and PvE content has not been ruled out for future releases.

“Instead of attempting to build our grand vision all at once, we’re taking a building block approach with Soul Kingdoms.” said Mhley. “Our goal is to start as small and simple as possible. This allows us to focus on making key systems, such as combat and progression, great before adding more layers to the equation. We feel that as a small indie team this is the optimal path for us to take. We’re confident that we will be able to deliver a solid experience with each milestone release.”

Power Proc Studios will be holding multiple playtests and a live streamed 5v5 tournament for Soul Kingdoms in the coming weeks. Their next playtest is on Monday, 11/29 at 6 p.m. PST. The tournament is on Saturday, 12/11 at 11 a.m. PST, where the winners will be awarded the highest tier Founders Pack. Playtest and tournament participants will also be entered into a giveaway for a chance to win a Founders Pack for the game. If you’d like to participate in any upcoming tests or the tournament, head over to the Soul Kingdoms Discord to sign up.
