R1v1r Runes is an arcade game created as a modification to Dota 2, which can be played at the Steam Workshop. The biggest difference between the regular Dota 2 gameplay and that of R1v1r Runes is that while Dota is conventionally a 5v5 format, R1v1r Runes is a 1v1 matchup. In the 1v1 format, the game is only played in the mid-lane, with the other two lanes disabled. In order to win, players must destroy the opponent’s tower or kill the enemy hero twice. Another modification is that heroes in R1v1r Runes begin the game at level 6, which means that most heroes will have abilities from the moment the game begins. Level 6 is usually the stage at which heroes are able to unlock their most powerful ability, known as an ultimate. In Dota 2, strategy on the part of the team sees heroes rise to gain their ultimate; with heroes starting R1v1r Runes with their ultimate already in place, a completely different strategy will be needed in the 1v1 game. Apart from their ultimate, gamers will also be granted three items when they start the game. The first item is the Blink Dagger, which allows a hero to be teleported to a certain distance. The second item is a Bottle, which can be consumed three times to get 100 health and 50 mana each time. The third item is an Observer Ward, which provides vision anywhere on the map for five minutes after being placed.

Over the weekend, Red Bull OG have won The International 8. ‘Topson’, ‘ana’, ‘7ckngMad’, ‘JerAx’ and team captain ‘N0tail’ have lifted the Aegis of Champions for the first time, live on stage in Vancouver, Canada, sharing between them a first prize jackpot of more than $11,200,000 – the biggest prize ever awarded in the history of esports. The new mid-player ‘Topson’ and now Ti8 Champion was discovered through his gameplay strats and mid hero gameplay. The 20-year old Finnish Topias ‘Topson’ Taavitsainen, has spent less than a year in the pro Dota 2 scene, but he’s been playing MOBAs since he was just eight years old. Topson’s breakout moment in the Pro Circuit came less 3 months ago.

The role of a Mid-Player is very crucial to Dota 2 and the fact that some heroes perform very well at mid, while others can still do a nice lane match-up depending on the player skill involved. The Red Bull R1v1r Runes match-ups addresses the skill issue by subjecting both the players to play identical heroes on mid using rapid game progression and quicker lanes, which forces an individual to make quick decisions and play aggressively while keeping a sane lane. With the rise of the Dota 2 Community in India, we are sure to find our next best mid-player for India through Red Bull River Runes.

Nodwin Gaming has collaborated with Red Bull to execute Red Bull R1v1r Runes in India. Akshat Rathee, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, NODWIN Gaming said, “Red Bull R1v1r Runes comes with a new kit of opportunities for gamers across the country, especially for the lone wolves who miss out solely because of not being able to find a team. And for R1v1r Runes you don’t need a team, it’s all you and your opponent. With esports at the apex of growth in the country, we would not want to let any gamer’s talent go unseen. We at NODWIN Gaming with a collective effort and a sole goal of providing the best for our gamers will ensure the same.”

The game has rapidly attracted numerous adventure seekers. Krish Gupta, a Dota 2 enthusiast, says, “R1v1r Runes is an interesting concatenation of the traditional 1v1 match-up with numerous additions that make the game much more fun to play. I would definitely recommend this game to others and I look forward to playing this with friends.”

Nishant Patel, co-founder of AFK Gaming, adds, “With the emergence of various media outlets and esport organizers dedicated to Dota 2 in India, the domestic scene has never looked brighter for budding professionals of the game. Tournaments such as the ESL India Premiership with a prize pool of 5 lakh for the winning team have upped the ante of the local circuit. The amount of energy and money invested into making the Dota 2 scene in India more prosperous has only been going up since 2011. The time for making an entrance in the scene and lay your investments is now.”

About Dota 2

Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena that was created as a modification of the game WarCraft 3. The modification became widely popular which resulted in it being developed into a proper game, now owned by Valve Corp. Several Dota 2 tournaments are held around the world with millions of gamers competing every year.

Dota 2 is played on a single square map with two teams stationed at camps diagonal opposite each other. Team Radiant is positioned at the bottom-left of the map while team Dire has its base at the top-right of the map. Three lanes – bottom, mid and top – connect the two camps, while a river runs across the map from top-left to bottom-right. Thick foliage and jungles occupy the space between the three lanes. The objective of the game is to destroy a tower called an Ancient in the opposition team’s camp in order to win the game. To do this, each gamer – in teams of five – controls a hero and goes into battle against opposition heroes. There are 115 heroes to choose from in Dota 2, each with its own unique abilities and playing style.

Heroes need experience to level up. Progressing through the hero’s levels increases the strength, agility and intelligence of the hero, and allows the gamer to add abilities to his hero to give him an edge in the game. Experience is gained from battling against other heroes, killing AI-controlled creeps that accompany the opposition team, and by killing neutral enemies across the map. Gamers also need to collect gold to buy items for their heroes. Runes are special items that spawn every two minutes on the river, and bounty runes with gold spawn near the jungle every five minutes. Killing neutral enemies also grants the hero gold. The items that can be purchased provide the hero certain powers specific to his abilities so the gamer needs to know which items work best with which hero. Certain items are called buffs since they provide advantages to friendly units they are applied to, and others are debuffs which disadvantage the rivals they are placed upon.

Unlike chess, which is a turn-based game, Dota 2 occurs in real-time; this means gamers are constantly upgrading heroes, picking up items, levelling-up, and going into battle. When a hero is killed, they re-spawn in their camp after a small delay. All of these permutations and combinations in the game keep it fast-paced and mean a gamer has to be active throughout to gain an advantage.
