REVIEW : Boomerang X (PC)

Several developers have tried their hand at arena shooters, in which players battle both NPC and player-controlled adversaries in a confined space. Boomerang X, the next arena shooter from DANG!, is a bit different from the others in that players don’t do any “shooting.” Instead, players are armed with a magical boomerang that they can use to dispatch adversaries. DANG! is an impressive arena shooter with a creative twist on the standard.

REVIEW : Boomerang X (PC)

Fight for your life.

Boomerang X begins with players arriving on the beach of an unknown island teeming with frightening creatures and treacherous settings. They will have to navigate the island while fighting through large waves of foes after discovering a sharpened boomerang. Many of the bizarre characteristics of the environment will begin to make sense as players progress through the game.

Boomerang X isn’t graphically hard work because the developers chose a distinct art style instead. The island remains colourful, with each area of the game visually different from the others. This is also true for the game’s various adversaries, which are so diverse from one another that some of them appear to have been imported from other games. Boomerang X’s audio design was very appealing to me. From the sounds of the jungle to the boomerang powering up, sound serves to build the tone in Boomerang X.

They keep coming back.

Boomerang X’s primary tool is the boomerang. Players throw the boomerang to take out foes, and it always flies back to your hands, much like a boomerang. If you move after throwing the boomerang, it will track and follow you. Players can speed up the process by right-clicking the mouse, which will bring the boomerang back almost fast.

When players engage in combat, they are confined to a tiny arena with a limited number of waves of attackers. As the difficulty of the levels increases, the battle becomes increasingly chaotic, with opponents assaulting players in hordes. In these instances, the boomerang made me feel like a total badass. Tossing it frantically and timing up my recalls hitting numerous adversaries simultaneously felt quite satisfying.

REVIEW : Boomerang X (PC)

Boomerang X contains a plethora of various enemy kinds. Some are spider-like and crawl on the ground, while others fly freely in the sky. In addition, even larger adversaries serve to spawn more little opponents for you to deal with. A diverse set of creature kinds also keeps the player on their toes, requiring them to continually adapt and focus on numerous things at once during the fight.

Pinpoint accuracy

The lack of lock-on or auto-aim on the boomerang also adds to the sense of struggle. Even though the boomerang may be recalled very instantaneously, player precision is critical. I was able to adjust rather quickly while playing on the keyboard and mouse.

REVIEW : Boomerang X (PC)

Boomerang X’s combat and character advancement are both fantastic, in addition to its solid world pacing.

There are attainable skills, such as slingshotting yourself to the airborne boomerang or slowing downtime during throws. Combining these skills makes fighting thrilling, and the wealth of usefulness keeps the boomerang from becoming stale or monotonous as the game goes.

In Boomerang X, players will acquire upgrades, learn some mythology, and solve tiny puzzles between battle parts. However, I wish the sections that break up the combat were longer. With all of the unique powers offered and the physics of the boomerang itself, I believe there was room for some non-combat solid segments. These sections aren’t horrible, but they merely felt like connective tissue between fighting zones.

review-boomerang-x-pcBoomerang X is a unique twist on the arena shooter genre. The combination of focusing on a single weapon, a wide range of abilities, and a high level of expertise makes frantic battle enjoyable in almost every situation. The game is relatively short, which works well for the speed of both the plot and the action. DANG! and Devolver Digital have created an excellent indie with Boomerang X, which only feels tedious in the gaps between the action.
