REVIEW : DIGIMON STORY: CYBER SLEUTH – HACKER’S MEMORY (PS4/ PS4 Pro)

Digimon Anime series had variety of games in a number of genres but none worked as good as the 2015’s Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth which put the franchise back in front of the eyes of gamers. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory tires to capture the same magic as the previous one.

Hacker’s Memory is a turn-based RPG similar to previous entry and has around 340 Digimon for you to capture and befriend. With capturing and Leveling up being so easy you can maintain a variety of team for any situation. This results in relatively less grinding as you will never encounter an enemy which over powers you as you will always have a Digimon to counter it. You still need scan for specific type of Digimon during battle.

Digimon series has only 4 Types unlike Pokemon which are The Virus, Vaccine, and Data types work in a paper-scissors-rock type setup, while the fourth type, No Relation. There are 9 different elements for attack which makes things tricky but the targeting system comes to the rescue as it helps determine what will be effective.

Battles flow very fast in this game and little time is invested in heavy animations and navigating through menus to attack is super smooth. This is especially enjoyable later in the game when insignificant enemies do not take much of your time.

Digi Bank is a multipurpose area which you will be accessing a lot of in the game to grow your Digimon. Here you can use Digi Evolve, Digi Convert or adjust your party. Digi Farm is also part of Digi Bank, where your Digimon can train and find quests plus keep messaging you to build up the bond.

The game features something called Memory Limit to put a cap on the number of party members you can have. Each Digimon takes up certain amount of memory depending on how strong it is, this is a neat little micromanagement added to the game. You can manage to fit in 9 Monsters if you manage the cap wisely. Since only 3 Monsters can take part in battlefield at once you have to decide which monster works best for you.

Sometime you will be battling large group of enemies In domination battles, in this you will be moving around a grid and gather points for capturing areas with the goal to reach the total. While trying to complete the objective you will face group of enemies in turn based battles, this is fun as this is change of pace from the usual battles.

The story is quite engaging and entertaining as was the case was with previous game. You take the role of a student who is living in future where advanced Internet EDEN has taken over everybody’s life. This results in rampant cybercrimes which you have to stop with the help of characters you meet along the way. There is plenty of side quests to keep you occupied and the story is very well written with good doze of humor. You do not have to play previous game to enjoy this one as the story is not the exact continuation of the previous game. Though, many a times you would have to level up to progress through the main story which results in grinding through the side quests, though some of the side quests are really good but not all have you hooked. The biggest draw back of the game is the mini map which is not helpful at all which results in you being lost and trying to find your way most of the times.
