REVIEW : Mighty Fight Federation (PC)

Mighty Fight Federation is an exciting brawler from Komi Games Inc. and publisher Forthright Entertainment with a lot of potential and deep fighting systems, though some AI issues and control issues keep it from being flawless. Fortunately, the appeal, potential for development, and solid fundamentals are enough to get players dusting off their modded battle sticks and brawling.

REVIEW : Mighty Fight Federation (PC)

Mighty Fight Federation is an arena brawler in three dimensions. Players take control of unique fighters and battle it out through free-roaming 3D arenas in an effort to be the last one standing, taking a cue from 1999’s Power Stone, arguably one of the best Dreamcast games. There are numerous combos to master, characters have distinct play styles, and maps feature various arena styles to keep things interesting. But button mashers beware: Mighty Fight Federation has a complex system of combos, splits, and counters that can be difficult to understand at first, but once mastered, is a lot of fun.

REVIEW : Mighty Fight Federation (PC)

Mighty Fight Federation has pretty much everything a good 3D arena fighter should have, and the focus is clearly on close multiplayer action. Local multiplayer works well, allowing up to four players to engage in fun and frantic fights. Mighty Fight Federation has enough content to keep these fights interesting, with a wide range of character models and map types. In terms of game modes, the versus mode offers a free mode for up to four players, as well as AI and team modes. There’s a fun arcade mode with storey arcs and unlockable skins for each character, as well as an online mode that should be the game’s meat. There were no available servers at the time of writing, but that should change after the launch.

In this respect, Mighty Combat Federation has two advantages. For starters, several of the original characters, such as an obvious Vince McMahon wrestling mastermind, a gym rat Demon who is swole for souls,’ a drunk skeleton singer, and so on, have a parody-like charm to them. Second, Komi Games Inc. and Forthright Entertainment were able to secure licencing deals. Both Yooka-Laylee and Toejam and Earl are playable fighters as of this writing, and they are well-implemented, with more on the way. The good thing is that these licenced characters’ move sets, animations, and combos have gained as much exposure as the original characters, making them as interesting to play as the rest of the crew while not being overshadowed.

REVIEW : Mighty Fight Federation (PC)

Despite its many positive attributes, there are a few issues that could throw off potential players to Mighty Fight Federation. For example, the tutorial refused to allow gamepad inputs, preferring instead to use the keyboard, while any other game mode operated perfectly after some troubleshooting. The more serious problem is that AI is unable to cope with some terrain features in the arenas. For example, the Yooka-Laylee map is extremely simple to cheat because the AI can’t figure out how to jump on the large book that players can easily reach, resulting in a very real Impossible Lair in Yooka-point. Laylee’s Similarly, some AI in the demon’s gym struggled to re-enter the boxing ring in the middle of the point. Hopefully, this will be addressed in the future, as the AI is very capable in other areas and can perform their combos on a level, flat combat surface.
