I’ve been enjoying Flippyfly’s Race the Sun for some time, The addictive and challenging gameplay is so natural that it’s simply become part of my normal routine, which is a testament to the game’s genius.
Race the Sun is an endless-runner — or as the developer puts it, an “Infinite Speed Experience. Game manages to accomplish sense of adrenaline and speed.
Race the Sun has simplistic graphics which amazing to look at and are light on system requirements On the highest settings.
The solar powered craft runs endlessly avoding obstacles, power ups and ramps help you go air born making it easier to manage the ever increasing obstacles. Collectable ‘Tris’ multiplies your score , while your score itself is racked-up through distance traveled. Jumps, shields, and daylight-extending power-ups help you gain more distance but they are often placed in narrowest gaps.
Consistency in control makes or breaks games like Race the Sun, and Flippyfly has nailed it with solid, easy-to-understand gameplay. The craft has some weight to it and it is felt while taking turns. Though the game supports keyboard, the game is best experienced with controller.
The ship can survive minor bumps but head on hit leads to an end. Running out of daylight suffocates the ship and slows it down, bringing thr end to the race.
There are no lives, continues, or do-overs, making each and every run a high-stakes race to complete challenges and build leader board-topping high scores. The world-maps only change once a day, allowing you to find and memorize the best path through the current world, encouraging replay value.
In addition to high-score boasting leader boards, in-game challenges run from easily attainable to seemingly impossible. While some challenges are laid-back goals that anyone would be likely to meet, others are hard to attain. My favorite challenges involve clearing levels with no collisions while only making turns in a single specified direction.
At any given time you’ll have a set objectives everytime you start to play, you complete the objectives to increase the player level. Increasing your level unlocks new customization options for your ship, some are cosmetic while others alter the gameplay itself.
The game’s Apocalypse Mode is very addicting, speed and difficulty increases continuously as I try to climb the daily leader boards.
Though I play Race the Sun to relax my mind but often end up with sweaty controller. It’s an odd combination of mindless relaxation and nerve-wracking speed. It’s addicting and rewarding.
The game is currently available on Steam for $9.99 USD, and while the game is officially released , developer Flippyfly is releasing regular updates and enhancements to improve the game experience.
