REVIEW : Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet (PS4/ PS4 Pro)

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet has more guns and rockets than blade and swords. It is set in brown and grey wastelands rather than any fantasy setting. It’s still a RPG which has been morphed into a shooter.

Kirito and other characters still play an important role but they are moved to the side line. Your created character plays the main role and this is a welcome change as this allows new players to enjoy the game without know Kirito and his gang.

The writing is superb and the game is brilliantly localized, only wish that the choices could have been better as the options don’t matter much and usually mean the same thing.

There is variety of skills to learn and master. Along with number of weapons to choose in the battlefield. You can be an attacking player or defensive healer; the amount of choice and customization is just brilliant.

The shooting in the battles feels a bit off as you cannot play the game as any modern shooter. Vast majority of enemies move fast and it’s hard to get a precise aim. No aim assist does not help either. This makes the game feel janky as the enemies can still shoot you from across the map.

There is assist mode when you aim from the hip, it targets nearby foe and helps you just blast away at them. Still, you are unable to hit enemies at their critical points. You will only be able to get some critical shots when the enemy stops moving. There is dodge roll and evasive dash to help you out of critical situations. The game plays more like and hack and slash and rather than a shooter. The game is definitely grindy but it is enjoyable to do all the quests and you can sink lot of hours into it.

Graphically the game is unimpressive to say the least. Environments are dull and gloomy. Only a few sights catch your eye but those are very rare.

The campaign takes around 40 hours to complete. Apart from that there is co-op missions and player versus player modes. Co-op missions have you team up with one other person to take on bosses from the main story. Since the bosses are taken from main story the missions feel very similar. While the PvP mode has you and your team compete against another team to gain the max point against a boss.
