REVIEW : WWE 2K 18 (PS4/ PS4 Pro)
WWE being a annual franchise you cannot expect much evolution but that is not a bad thing. WWE 2K 18 is fundamentally same to last few years game, it the subtle changes that make it good.
The subtle changes in WWE 2K 18 make it the best iteration in recent times. Its more polished and smooth, has a great roster, has refined gameplay and number of modes on offer is outstanding.
The creator studio returns and it is amazing. In WWE 2K 18 you can create a wrestler, create an arena or create an entrance any which way you want, to your hearts content.
There are limitations but most won’t hit the limitations at all as 2K has provided a comprehensive tool. You can create yourself or any wrestler that has ever existed. It requires a fair bit of practice before you master it but this is the definition of creator suite.
You can get your hand-crafted wrestler in MyCareer mode which is amazing. The implementation is not as significant as NBA 2K 18 but it is miles better than WWE 2K 17.
Small Environment backstage where you can interact with other superstars provide you the feel of being backstage a WWE event. The promo system has also been improved. The main attraction is still the in-ring matches, in MyCareer mode you have to climb up the ladder from being nobody to a WWE Champion and it is much more expansive compared to previous year.
Road to Glory is a great spin-off mode to MyCareer as you can take your created superstar and pit it against other online players in order to Qualify for WWE PPV. This is brilliant idea as now online matches are more meaningful and all the while fighting you earn bonuses and XP with which you can upgrade your superstar. Sometimes connection and Latency can be an issue but that is rare and the only issue with this mode.
Universe mode makes a return but it is largely unchanged apart from the addition of WWE rankings. While it is unchanged, it is still greatly enjoyable. There is lot of potential in Universe mode and hope 2K works on it more.
The gameplay is similar to old games, more focus is towards simulation. 2K has done an amazing job refining already established gameplay mechanics and ironing out some of the negatives from previous generations. Matches are more enjoyable with lot of back and forth with reversal mechanics optimized and are far more balanced. Pin or submit also have far more options than before, which will take time to master but are insanely enjoyable.
This feeling carries over to multiplayer as well when someone breaks a 3 count or should is off the mat at 2 and half count, this is exhilarating and so enjoyable.
The best matches are when you plan it out with a friend and execute it well. WWE 2K18 matches are filled with adrenalin rush and we can only imagine what the creators will do taking this series forward.
Even with all the praise we have to mention that there still are bugs, glitches and all-round silliness. Collision detection system has been improved but still far from perfect.
WWE 2K 18 is most refined and enjoyable WWE game till date. IT has everything you can imagine WWE game to have apart from a story mode.
