Bohemia Interactive Looks Back at 2020: A Year of Remarkable Achievements

Bohemia Interactive, one of the Czech Republic’s most successful game developers, shares last year’s victories and accomplishments across all of its main titles – DayZ, Arma 3, Vigor, and Ylands

In 2020, the company achieved some impressive milestones as their top titles, top contenders in the online multiplayer gaming category, continue to amass outstanding growth and success. With a new engine in the works – Enfusion – and other ambitious plans, Bohemia Interactive has a very exciting future ahead.

Bohemia in 2020 by Numbers

  • Over 5.7 million copies sold (base games + DLC)
  • 14+ million players total across all Bohemia’s games
  • 6.4 million DayZ active players
  • 4.6 million Vigor active players
  • 2.3 million Arma 3 active players
  • DayZ reached top peak of concurrent players on PC since 2014 – a total number of 40,545 in February
  • DayZ saw 4.1 Million new users, with Xbox leading with 2.5M
  • 9,000+ DayZ mods created by players

Enfusion

In the past year, many Bohemians have been quietly working behind the scenes on the company’s future, which will be powered by its new Enfusion engine. This investment in custom-built next-gen technology is a top priority at Bohemia and 2020 saw a ton of improvements come into being.

Developers at Bohemia have been working hard for the last couple of years to upgrade the rendering and the physical engine of Enfusion, as well as considerably improving performance with a myriad of optimization techniques. In addition, the engine hosts a large number of new features that were specifically requested by Bohemia’s game teams and the request to significantly enhance support for modding. Finally, efforts have been focused on implementing an infrastructure that will support cross-play and user-generated content across various gaming platforms. And these are just a few examples of the team’s last year accomplishments.

Bohemia expects to continue working hard throughout 2021 to make Enfusion Bohemia’s most powerful and versatile engine to date, supported by a user-friendly set of development and modding tools.

Vigor

It was a busy year in the Outlands, with no less than 5 new seasons of Vigor and a dazzling array of fresh weapons, skins, and cosmetics. Bohemia also started a closed beta for the Nintendo Switch in April, which led to a release with the Founder’s Pack in July and a full, free-to-play release in September. Later in December, the company released  Vigor on PlayStation 4 and 5.

Looking forward to 2021, fans can expect more new seasons coming their way, along with a concerted effort to grow the community and improve the overall quality of the game.
Arma 3

Arma 3 hit its seventh anniversary this year, and to keep things rolling it launched two primary platform updates in the form of 1.98 (Arma 3 Apex: Old Man) and 2.00. And let’s not forget update 1.2 for Global Mobilization, which went live in June and introduced a wide range of new content to the Creator DLC for free.

Rounding out the year, Bohemia released the Arma 3 soundtrack (also on Steam), launched the Arma 3 Art of War contest, and announced Arma 3 Creator DLC: CSLA Iron Curtain.

So far as 2021 is concerned, fans can expect continued Live Ops development, as well as the Art of War charity DLC, and even more Creator DLC projects to be released.

DayZ

DayZ received a total of four updates in 2020, featuring new weapons and mechanics and all-around fun.

Bohemia’s plan is to release several major updates in 2021, as well as focusing on delivering new assets and fixes, and improving the game’s balance and stability. As if that wasn’t enough, preparation for next-gen compatibility is also slated to begin.

Ylands

It was a fun and exciting year at Ylands, one that saw the release of five updates and two goodie packs. The team launched the very first Creators Competition for Ylands in October and received two awards at the Czech Game Awards in September.

Some of the things you can expect in 2021 include continued updates focusing on exploration, the editor, and the Ylands platform in general. There are also some smaller asset updates in the works, as well as Ylands making its debut in schools, Ylands 1.0 being released in China, and bigger and better Creator Competitions held throughout the year.
