Crowd of 1200+ fans cheer Dallas Fuel to commanding 3-0 victory in live esports match

More than 1,200 attendees from North Texas and many traveling in from around the U.S. gathered at Esports Stadium Arlington on Friday afternoon to watch the first large scale live esports event in North America in over a year. The Dallas Fuel, a professional esports team competing in the Overwatch League, took the stage to a sold out, roaring crowd to take on their rivals the Houston Outlaws in a match dubbed ‘The Battle for Texas’.

The match ended in a decisive victory for the Dallas Fuel, who won 3-0 behind strong Tracer play from damage player Yeong-han “SP9RK1E” Kim. With the win, the Dallas Fuel retained their spot in first place in the 2021 Overwatch League regular season standings and qualified for the Summer Showdown tournament, making it three straight Overwatch League tournament appearances for the Fuel.

“We were beyond excited to host the first live Overwatch League match in North America of the year,” said Mike Rufail, owner and Chief Gaming Officer of Envy Gaming, Inc, the Dallas-based esports organization that owns the Dallas Fuel. “It made all the difference in the world to our players and to our entire organization to see Texas fans and Fuel fans turn out to support our team, and we were so happy to bring home another victory in the Battle for Texas.”

Fans had the opportunity to watch Overwatch League matches between four other teams on the stadium’s big screens before the marquee match featuring the Dallas Fuel live, in-person. Activations onsite also included a cosplay contest and esports themed activities where fans could test their skills in gaming competition.

Returning to live competition for the first time in almost 18 months was an exciting moment for the rebuilt Dallas Fuel roster, many of which joined in the offseason prior to the 2021 season. The Dallas Fuel is currently in first place in the Overwatch League season standings.

“It was amazing to see fans from Dallas and from all over the U.S. Sensing their energy and excitement in our team coming out on stage really helps motivate us for the rest of the season,” said Hee-won “RUSH” Yun, Head Coach for the Dallas Fuel.
