PS5 is coming in the future. So what exactly is in store for PS5 now that the life cycle of ps4 is coming to an end?

PS5 Release Date

Sony is pretty keen on keeping their mouths shut about the release date, but it will definitely be revealed in the coming months. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president and CEO Shawn Layden confirmed in an interview that the PS5 release date will be revealed soon. Last year it was rumoured that the PS5 release date will be in somewhere around the year 2021. But now some new reports indicate that the PS5 release date could be as soon as December 2019. But Sony has confirmed that the PS5 release date will not be revealed in the E3 2019.

Several rumours indicate that PS5 could be compatible ps4, ps3, ps2 and the original playstation. Therefore PS5 games can take you back to the games as far back as the 90’s. Sony president and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida confirmed in an interview that the PS5 will have next generation hardware. PS5 price in India and worldwide is being speculated as somewhere close to $399. But this information is yet to be verified.

These are the current rumoured specifications about PS5:

CPU: 8 core /16 threads at 3.2 ghz with a zen2 architecture

GPU: Navi-based with next gen features at 12.6 to 14.2 teraflops

Memory: 24 GB total with 20 GB GDDR6 at 880 gb/s and 4 GB for the operating system

2 TB HDD

They also promise 4K 60 FPS across the board.

CPU

The core of the PS5 will be about the CPU processing power. Some rumours report that the advanced technology group is working with the AMD’s Ryzen technology. This is new because the existing PlayStation hardware does not have the Ryzen technology. This could indicate that Sony is planning to combine a Ryzen X86 CPU and Radeon graphics into a single chip to make things simpler from an economic point of view. Also the Sony advanced technology also works on unrelated hardware like ps5 games, ps5 trailer etc. Sony is opting for an optical computing. The basic idea behind this technology is that the computers use light instead of electricity for computing. The internal wiring may be replaced with optical waveguides and transistors that will be powered by photons instead of electrons. It will be a hybrid device an optoelectric computer.

Memory

Now let us talk about memory. It is speculated that PS5 may come with the 3D stacked RAM. Sony could be possibly partnering with micron to add RRAM to PS5. This type of RAM stacks multiple layer which allows the electrodes to store more and more data storage. Then there is NRAM which is non volatile technology which is predicted to be more disruptive to storage servers and consumer electronics than flash memory.

GPU Graphics and Hardware

Sony released Ps4 which can use up to 4.2 teraflops of power. It uses this to reach resolutions close to 4K. It is also rumoured that PS5 might use both of AMD’s Zen and Navi graphics architecture. What still remains a mystery is how this will look it could be a massive system on a chip or divide its components based on Navi and Ryzen respectively. Details on Navi is still ambiguous but we do know that they will be using a 7nm process. Mark Cerny offered his opinion in an interview where he believes you need 8 teraflops for the true experience of 4k. Sony could easily be aiming for that. Everything is probably going to be in 4K UHD by the time PS5 releases in 2020 which seems to be the speculated PS5 release date 2019. PS5 may also use the technology of holographic displays which is a technology that already exists. But it also depends on how much the technology has evolved. They could also adapt the technology for photorealistic graphics with new consoles.

Storage

In terms of storage Sony could continue to store games on the hard drives or we could stream games from the cloud and remove the need for the traditional console.

Television or VR

Television have always been the primary method of viewing content. PlayStation VR is still an infant technology, but it’s started to include games. Live demos have showed us that. Virtual reality is gaining popularity quickly and PS5 most certainly may have a VR element. While virtual reality may become popular chances are it may become a side element with television taking the main role.

Controller

Will Sony be launching PS5 with the traditional controller or will it be something different? The PlayStation dualshock controller has evolved into a perfect device along with ps4. Sony might have a hard time improving this device with PS5. But it is possible that dualshock 5 will work with some sort of enhanced controller like the PlayStation move.
