REVIEW : Devil May Cry HD Collection (PS4)
Devil May Cry HD Collection is a minimum effort remaster from Capcom. They have just increased the resolution and called it a remaster. The games in the remaster are showing its age and that’s expected from PS2 era games but a remaster should be about bringing old games to new generation with love and care so that they are cherished by new audience but instead Capcom went with an easy cash grab of a remaster.
Devil May Cry looks the worst due to its angular character models and rough lighting. Devil May Cry 2 is not any better. It was developed by a different team and the art design is more bland and over all the game looks clumsy by todays standard. Devil May Cry 2 takes what good about the original and turns it up to 11. It offers fantastic beast and huge bosses which still hold up 13 years later.
The games run at 1080p resolution and there is no 4K option for PS4 Pro and XBOX one X. Devil May Cry 3 features slight enhancement in lighting and textures over last remaster but it is nothing to write home about.
The game features the same packaging as last remaster with concept art, soundtracks and fan art. The controls have been slightly tuned for the first game to feel more like second and third game. The game could have greatly benefited from better textures and lighting but Capcom does not want to make an effort. What’s even worse is that the game carries over the bugs from past. Sometimes you won’t be able to see some enemies. The Most refined game of the package is Devil May Cry 3.
Behind the lazy remaster are some great games which still hold up gameplay wise. You will get hooked to these amazing games in no time. The combat and the pacing are exceptional. The combat is still as satisfying as it was back in the day.
The third game pits Dante against his evil brother and contains the best boss fights the series has to offer. The monsters are unique and the combat has sufficient variety to not make it feel repetitive.
With games such as Shadow of the Colossus getting such amazing remaster, it is sad to see 3 good games get a lazy remaster from Capcom. Wish Capcom would have given a clean slate and made a remake instead of remaster but no easy money in that.
