REVIEW : h8machine (PC)

h8machine is a card game set in a dystopian future where Artificial Intelligence has taken over the internet world, and the worst part is that it has learned to behave just like people.

But AI isn’t simply a flavour in this case! A neural network in-game allows you to customise and randomise 2D art in real time! You may immerse yourself in the world of anime profile photos uploading pure rubbish with this TECHNOLOGY. It’s exactly like social media in real life! For whatever reason, no one utilises real-time-with-pause in card games. But I like RTWP, so I just put it in!

Your main resource is the passage of time! Will you become lost in the frantic jumble of ticking timers, or will you optimise every fraction of a second available to you? Remember that the active pause mechanism allows you to play any card while the timer is stopped. Use it to make decisions and perform explosive combos!

Are you bored of acquiring cards one by one and having to discard the bad ones as the deck builder game progresses? Instead, in h8machine, you take packets of cards with their own “personalities,” internet stereotypes and so. Each of these characters contributes one-third of your deck, and you can mix and match them to create decks with a pre-built feel.

It is one of the best games ever created.

This is a creative little game, both in terms of gameplay and atmosphere. The only thing I want from this product is more of everything: adversaries, cards, gameplay variety, and so on. In terms of gameplay, what’s already here is fascinating and distinctive. Congratulations to the creator, and I hope this receives the recognition it deserves since, beneath all of the memes and internet in-jokes, the main gameplay is fantastic.

A fun and original take on the deck builder formula, with unique synergies arising from reply trees (battlefield) and energy acquired by burning cards.

Hopefully, it will receive additional improvements, such as scrolling the map up in rogue-like mode, more cards/enemies/events, and difficulty changes (the moderator questionnaire’s excessively short timer comes to mind).

The major disadvantage is that there is no way to save and quit mid-run, so be prepared to give up or have a 1h+ sitting at a time.

review-h8machine-pcIf you want to test out other activities like Slay The Spire and Inscription, this is a steal for the price. I've had a lot of fun with this, both in the demos and now in the final product.
