REVIEW : LEGO® CITY Undercover (PS4/ PS4 Pro)

What happens when LEGO franchise decides to fathom out its notorious side in family-friendly GTA style? Well, the result is LEGO City Undercover. With back to back games, LEGO has announced it as an open season fun and frolic. This time the gaming studio has not cantered the game on some superhero movie or on LEGO game city but has come neck to neck with the ever-so-loved game series – Grand Theft Auto. The game has never been directly paralleled up with GTA at any point, nor is GTA referenced within the game yet the similarities are uncanny.

The game is cantered around a single character unlike the previous games where the player had option of playing the game as different characters. The hero of the game is a “super cop” by the name of Chase McCain, who has the indestructibility of John McClane and the voice of Zapp Brannigan. Chase is joined by his nemesis, Rex Fury who is the mastermind that the police are trying to catch. Failing to do so, Chase is brought in to sack up Rex once again and this is how the story kicks in. The player learns about Chase’s crime fighting abilities and about his arsenal of tools which are very helpful and important to progress through the game.

The game is set in a city not made entirely of Legos. YES. The city is NOT made of Legos. You must be wondering what kind of Lego game is this where the buildings and other items are plain and bland and not made out of Legos. Well this was one gamble that didn’t pan out as well as the developers would have hoped it too. However this will eventually grow on you as you engross yourself in trying to solve the missions which itself are pretty entertaining with occasional edgy jokes and references to movies. The missions are novce friendly and they will glide along easily with you chuckling at the subtle references to movies like Goodfellas, Matrix and The Shawshank Redemption, and games like Mario where a question mark is floating in the air. You know exactly what to do when you see such a brick and that is exactly what the game wants you to do too. The game has been focussed for the younger age group and it may be hard for them to get the movie references since the movies are old classics. However, for those who enjoy such puns the game has plenty to offer.

The original game was launched in 2013 and since then not a lot has changed in terms of the gameplay. The game dopes look sharper and more balanced with the in-game cut scenes looking more fluidic however, the issue of frame rate is still evident on more than one occasion although it is still not a deal breaker but should have been addressed. The game also introduces a co-op mode to help the younger ones to seek help from the veterans in those frustrating missions which are just too adamant. (Remember the remote controlled toy airplane that is used to drop bombs on to a building in GTA – yes the frustration we faced during that, the co-op mode is for the times exactly like those).

Apart from the main storyline, the game offers many side missions too where the user has to collect many items and collectibles through the game. These collectibles offer various abilities and rewards. Even though the main game finishes, the user may continue playing the game in order to complete the whole collection of items. The city is vast and has a lot to offer where we can interact with most objects and like GTA just roam around the city aimlessly appreciating the great graphic designing skills of the game developers. (Yes because that is what we do in GTA). The game also offers many vehicles and costumes, each of which come up with their own special abilities. All in all, the game can be played for countless hours even after finishing the main story.

As the story comes to a conclusion you will see the jokes and the twists coming miles away and you would still laugh when the joke hits you right in the face. The game has fun at its own expense and that is the comic feel of the game. The comic relief is exceptionally broad and to add icing to the cake, the characters feel natural and the situations comical with you feeling the unseen nods and the winks as they deliver their lines. By the time Lego City Undercover’s story comes to an end, you have guided Chase through every action-movie circumstance imaginable and yet it never grows old. The game grows on you with every passing mission and you would ease in to the game setting and the city of Lego slowly, exactly like in GTA. The city is vast and for the taking and you can play the game the way you like.

review-lego-city-undercover-ps4-ps4-proThe Lego franchise has hit the nail on its head and following the proven formulae in other games, the Lego City Undercover also moves along the same lines, yet feels different in a good way. The game is appealing to the audience and considering the fact that it is aimed at the junior audience (a GTA which kids can play), the game is sure to gain popularity and considering the fact that it comes from LEGO franchise, the game would be a good sell too. Final verdict about the game would be a thumbs up with a clear message of trying out the game as it definitely is mass appealing, beautiful and is LEGO.
