REVIEW : LG 34GL750 Monitor
The LG 34GL750-B is a gaming monitor that hits a lot of the right notes and looks great while doing it. It’s 34-inch diagonal is huge, and it tops its gaming credentials with a gentle curve. And, that’s not the only attractive attribute that makes it a great buy. It supports AMD FreeSync and it runs on an IPS panel. You’ll also love the 1 millisecond response time and 144GHz, all of which make for a great gaming monitor.
The 34GL750-B even looks great from behind, thanks to the beautiful ergonomic stand. For the price, this is a serious investment, one that would benefit greatly from built-in speakers and a USB-C port.
DESIGN
Expansive screens like this always look disarming at first. Its 3800mm radius spreads into a gentle arc, meaning you don’t suffer from image distortion, instead, the sides tilt the screen towards the user. It’s splendid, not distracting.
The 21:9 aspect ratio is more useful than what you’d get on taller 4K screens; the additional width is ideal for films, and it provides extra screen real estate for working. As described, it’s great for gaming: racing titles tend to have more immersion as scenery flashes past, and there’s more room to manoeuvre in FPS titles, and RTS and MOBA games get a boost.
The panel is secured inside a good-looking plastic enclosure, that’s accented with red along the back of the screen and part of the stand. Build quality is also nice, and the screen feels firm on a desk despite its width. You don’t find many downsides on LG’s design, though. The bezels around the panel are pretty thick, and that’s a tiny aesthetic quibble.
FEATURES
The LG’s pixel density of 82ppi isn’t very high it’s likely to see pixels when you’re up-close, and 3,440 x 1,440 screens tend to have a clearer density measurement of 110ppi.
The upside, however, is that it’s more comfortable to play most games on this screen – the more inferior pixel count indicates that you don’t need a blazing GPU to get games running smoothly, and it also gives you ample headroom to take benefit of the LG’s 144Hz refresh rate.
By including AMD’s FreeSync technology this monitor easily runs a low figure of 50hz and a high of 144Hz.
You can connect your PC to the monitor via an upstream DisplayPort or either of the two HDMI ports, and audio comes via a headphone jack but doesn’t include built-in speakers.
PERFORMANCE
The LG 34GL750-B is a strong performer on both gaming and productivity tasks. Its brightness level of 256cd/m2 is within LG’s quoted figure, and it’s bolstered by a 0.19cd/m2 – which means the LG delivers a 1,363:1 contrast ratio. The higher the contrast ratio, the better. It means your colours will be vibrant, and it helps this monitor deliver a wide range of different shades – even closely-matched tones will be easier to tell apart. And that remarkable black level easily makes dark shades stand out – most gaming monitors aren’t this good when it comes to handling those inkier tones. Its average response time of 10.2ms is excellent, anything under 20ms is fine for gaming.
Were it not for the 21:9 aspect ratio, which stretches content across a wide but narrow canvas, you’d otherwise mistaken the monitor for a TV.
What makes the LG 34GL750-B a gaming display is its 1-millisecond response time and 144Hz. It also features AMD’s FreeSync technology which protects the screen from tearing.
For the most part, though, this monitor is excellent – with a sensible resolution and screen size paired with the solid build quality and robust features.
