REVIEW : Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes – Perfect warm-up for Phantom Pain (PS4)

Kept you waiting huh? Not anymore. Snake is back and back with a bang. The last game in this franchise, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (only PSP) left fans with desperation to play the next game. MSGV: GZ is a prologue to MGSV: Phantom Pain and a sequel to MGS: PW.

The brilliant and cryptic Hideo Kojima had mentioned that MGSV: GZ was an effort to introduce gamers to their new engine and open world game play.  What an introduction it was!

Storyline

This is the first game in the Metal Gear Solid franchise to feature an open world. Your open world here is limited to Camp Omega, an American black site in Cuba. You are assigned with the task to rescue Cipher agent Pacifica Ocean and Sandinista child soldier Ricardo ‘Chico’ Valenciano Libre (both from MGS: PW)

A brief introduction leaves you feeling excited about the game. You find yourself on the outskirts of Camp Omega in pouring rain. You are alone, doing what Snake does best. Using natural habitat to conceal yourself from the prying eyes of guards, you have to rescue the duo. They are hidden in separate locations and there are multiple ways to approach those locations. The game will definitely test your tactical nous.

Weapons and Combat

Since this is stealth game, your movement is your biggest weapon. You don’t have to kill everybody. The guards can be tagged using your binoculars. Once you are spotted, running away and hiding is the best option. You also get a few seconds to silence the guard. Otherwise be prepared to face a sea of guards. If you run away, the guards are quickly sent to your last location and avoiding a combat can get difficult. There is also no stamina meter to worry about. A few bullets can kill you, after you are warned about low health.

You can also hear the conversation between the guards, which helps you in your quest. Snake has shotguns, machine guns and rocket launchers in his arsenal. He is heavily loaded in that department.

Graphics and Engine

Nobody can play MGSV: GZ without being impressed by the graphics. I have to mention the lighting effects in the game. The game runs without any lags or frame rate issues. I played on the game on my PS4. The new Fox Engine makes an impressive debut on MGS franchise (Used before on PES 2014).

Game hours

It is sad that MGSV: GZ will be known for its short game time. A lot has been said about it. Some of it has been blown over the proportion. I completed the game and the side quests in about 4 hours.  It is simply a matter of choosing quality over quantity. The overall quality of the game is worth the money that you spend.
