The game is base of Metal Gear Solid 5 engine and every core mechanic feels familiar. The scavenging, crafting along with base building elements are thrown into the mix to transform it into a survival game. The map resembles Afghanistan from Metal Gear Solid 5.

The game also introduces Hunger and Thirst system which deplete over time. You need to scavenge food and water to keep things running. Hunger and thirst have effect on your max health so it is always wise to bring some snacks along in the missions. Since Wildlife is scarce throughout the game, it is hard hunting them down to keep up with your hunger. You can build farms at your base along with water refinery to keep up hunger and thirst in check.

The base building is very addictive in Metal Gear Survive. You need to build up defenses along with improving the facilities. Sometimes Horde attack your base, so you usually need to invest in defenses first.

The game involves lot of grind but the grind is always awarded and it is a satisfying feeling when you achieve something in the game.

Further, base provides various crafting stations to build gadgets, weapons and armor to make it easier to travel through the world. You will be making advance technologies as your progress through the game. You can also level up your character at base using the kuban energy you collected.

You have to scavenge everything in the game in order to craft them at the base. While traversing through the map you will also come across huge crates which are locked. You must lock pick them in order to access the contents, so it is always wise to get rid of the horde first. Stealth is the best option while taking out hordes.

You can only craft things at base and not while traversing the map, so any thing you scavenge is added to your storage. So, whenever you set out to scavenge you must have a set goal in mind to progress as every aspect of the game involves strategy.

Combat mostly involves stealth in Metal Gear Survive with guns blazing combat as a fall back option. The melee weapons feel satisfying to use. Further, the importance of stealth increases when you realize a single hit from enemy does immense amount of damage. You must have a tactical approach to take down hordes as it can get ugly quite fast.

You will find best loot in dust but that is also where stronger enemies reside and you have limited stamina. This makes every visit to dust area very intense and satisfying. Dust is toxic and you need to wear oxygen mask while exploring, once your oxygen reaches zero your health starts depleting. You can use crystals to regenerate your oxygen by that damages your oxygen tank. You can also find crew members to recruit while in the dusk. All this makes visiting dust worth it. The Dust also prevents your GPS or waypoint from working but you can always identify base as it throws out a bright light. You can setup worm hole teleporters in the dust to teleport back to base but since they are loud they can attract horde when booting up.

The game features multiplayer but those are only multiplayer missions and not the entire game as previously assumed. But the items earned in multiplayer can be used in single player, so it is a great way to farm resources. In the multiplayer missions you must defend the drill mining for iris energy from waves or wanderers with each wave getting increasingly difficult. Plus, there are side missions which pop up on the map which also provide loot.

review-metal-gear-survive-pc-steamMetal Gear Survive is a very solid survival game as well as Metal Gear game. It mixes the best of both words. Wish there was more variety in the missions but all the grind doing the same type of mission is payed off. Hardcore Gamers Unified recommends Metal Gear Survive as it beautifully blends Metal Gear with Survival genre.
