REVIEW : NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever Edition (PS4)

The NBA 2K line-up has risen to become one of the most successful ongoing franchises in gaming. Enabling players to step into the shoes of their beloved basketball superstars, 2K usually rests among the top selling sports games, year in and year out.

MyCareer has become the premier game mode in the NBA 2K series. Allowing players to build their own NBA star with the hopes of becoming the best in the class, MyCareer often defines each entry in the 2K games. The MyCareer in 2K21 follows the tale of Junior, a young hooper standing in the shadow of his deceased father, a popular basketball player. As Junior, players will go through high school, university, and eventually the NBA. Much like the story’s hero, MyCareer is haunted by its history.

REVIEW : NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever Edition (PS4)

For beginners, you can’t turn your camera angle until you make it to the NBA, forcing you to play various high school and university games from an awkward one-way viewpoint. The narrative itself lacks all of the emotional blows that it believes it has. As we’ve seen numerous times over, 2K21 tries to present a dramatic story with significant moments, but instead, we get a general story with writing so corny it borders on hilarious. For example, in university, Junior randomly gets into an argument with his girlfriend one night, athletes are faced with the choice to walk away from her and drop out of school, or apologize and spend some more time at college before declaring for the NBA draft.

Despite all of the script and design issues that plague 2K21, the gameplay is still pretty magnificent. Simply dribbling the ball, doing dribble moves, and passing the ball seems clean. Each of the players has such a different and vibrant feel to them. Sprinting down the court and pulling a deep three with Stephen Curry feels totally different than going down in the post and banging it home with Anthony Davis or Giannis Antetokounmpo.

One of the biggest problems with NBA 2K21 is that it seems like a .5 upgrade from last year’s 2K20. Several assets are reused from the former game. This looks more clear when designing a MyPlayer, as well as working them out in the team practice facility. Badges icons, models, and entire screens are present that were also seen in the last game. There are certain moments where you cannot tell the difference between 2K20 and 2K21.

REVIEW : NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever Edition (PS4)

VC, NBA 2K’s superior virtual currency, of course, makes its re-appearance in NBA 2K21. Either earned through playing games, achieving goals in MyCareer, or purchasing it with real-world money, VC is ubiquitous in 2K21. It’s used to enhance your player, buy new animations, purchase clothes, and it can be used across various game modes.

The problem with VC is that it’s a necessity to make any sort of quick growth in NBA 2K, particularly with MyCareer. On top of that, the amount of money you receive isn’t much at all in contrast to the amounts you’ll spend at the different stores and shops in 2K21, which requires athletes to either scrape away hours upon hours or crack open the wallet instead.

More ways to play

Luckily for NBA 2K21, there are added modes outside of MyCareer for players to participate in. In-Play Now, new teams have been added. Players can now fill up as the iconic Team USA squads from 2012 and 2016, as well as the recently added 2017 Golden State Warriors team. Play Now is a solid display game mode, and more playable teams are always a pleasing addition.

In MyTeam, players can collect cards and build a team comprised of the biggest names across NBA history. They can then take them into distinct challenges or play against mates online.

NBA 2K21 adds a new beach-themed neighbourhood for players to walk around and face off with others online utilising their designed players. While park sports can be fun from time to time, connection steadiness is noticeably more inferior when compared to other online modes. Both lag and timeouts are normal and have been for years. It’s a bit mind-boggling how a game as huge as 2K launches with average online servers every year.
