REVIEW : NieR:Automata (PS4/ PS4 Pro)

The dystopian world of NieR : Automata , though set as a sequel to 2010’s NieR does not hold any pre-requisites for the gamers. It does not require one to visit or revisit NeiR in order to play Automata.

” Which path will you take, it’s up to you to decide. “

A third person adventure, Automata lets its players sink in to the plethora of impedimenta , that it offers , from the very beginning. Set in a distant future, with great RPG elements (marking the comeback of platinum games) , mesmerizing cinematography and a melancholic tone , NeiR: Automata takes one on a breath taking adventure where a new species of android infantry  is set to mark their territory on the wasteland. The plot revolves around the post apocalyptic  period  where invaders from another world have started an announced battle on earth ; their weapon- machines. The humans have taken a refuge on moon and have proliferated  an army of android soldiers to reclaim their planet. The main protagonist is a female android- 2B , who has company from 9S , an android that not only helps her out throughout the game but is also a playable character later into the game’s setting. A2 , yet another female android shows up later who too is playable.  These female androids are very akin to humans keeping in regard their emotions , characteristics , relationships and well , not to forget their dressing sense ( which can later be critiqued upon).  A button smashing  game on the surface , NeiR : Automata has an unimaginable amount of ‘more in store’ to offer. With an intriguing storyline , the PS 4 and Microsoft windows compatible game sets its player on a multi role play in real time. The camera angle shifts from third person view to provide a bird eye view of the desolate atmosphere of the wasteland.

An appreciable and well thought quality of the game is its connectivity with the convincing  storyline that it never digresses away from , meaning – the player can even change the character’s elements such as targeting system and HUD via chips, since it’s an android. For the very same reason , the player can also replace an android , if killed. The bodies remain on map and it almost becomes must for the player to go back and retrieve their level , for if they fail to do so ,

  1. the level progression’s lost.
  2. the bodies that have not been resuscitated become an enemy that a player can defeat for bonus.

The inexplicable music in the backdrop sets one on an adventure that continues to be mystic and lets one unfold mysteries by exploring , discovering and growing with the plot that the game offers. The combat is smooth and polished where the player can evade enemy attacks. The battle offers heavy and light attacks , exactly how they’ve been defined. The switch between these attacks is effortless  and lets the player access more options to fight from.  Akin to the race of life , as the player progresses , he/ she gains experience increasing their health and in turn the power to act and defend.

2B also has a “pod” ( basically , a drone) that acts as a targeting system and lets the player shoot enemies at a distance. With an excellent animation and the right cinematographic pauses , the game really absorbs it’s players into its setting and gets them glued to their seats. Not giving much away , the fight on a moving roller coaster with just the right camera angles sets the player’s heartbeat racing.
That being said , the story becomes even more intense and advanced as one levels up. It has layers to unfold and mysteries to unravel. NeiR : Automata is a busy game that leaves one in splits when they are just a few steps away from replenishing their energy level. The multi genre science fiction however has got some drawbacks. The costumes are a total nay-nay , for a starter. The  changing pace of the camera view proves to be a cause of annoyance when all a player wants is the standard view , at times.

These drawbacks however, do not , in any way , overpower the excitement that the game offers.

” Everything that lives is designed to end. ” – 2B

NeiR : Automata offers TWENTY SIX possible endings depending upon how the players decides to move ahead in the game which also becomes a reason for it’s refreshing longevity.
