REVIEW : Rubber Bandits (PC)
If you want to play a multiplayer game with nearby friends or internet strangers, Rubber Bandits is the kind of game you can pick up and start playing right away. The gameplay is fundamentally the same as a traditional arena combat game, where you run and leap across areas, bash your opponents, and pick up various weapons. The objective of each game, though, is to gather as much money as you can before running away rather than eliminating the opposition. In fact, if you’re cunning enough, you can accomplish this without ever striking someone.
You will search your cell for anything you can throw at the bars preventing you from leaving to find freedom, but not before selecting a game mode. In the Heist mode, you can compete against other thieves to see who can steal the most loot, while the Brawl mode allows you to fight it out with other criminals to be the last one standing. Everyone’s crazy side comes out when there’s a selfish free-for-all, but the Arcade mode was my favourite for some reason.
In Rubber Bandits, there isn’t much setup required; just jump in and start playing. Despite the fact that you can pick your character, the levels are chosen at random, and there is a wide range of them that will have you stealing riches from a variety of unique places. Additionally, each stage has its own unique gimmicks, such as trampolines, switches that toggle bridges, and conveyor belts. When all of the wealth has been found, the exit will show up, which is also unusual because you may have to jump onto a boat or a helicopter to get out.
In the arcade mode, you can collaborate with up to three other players in local co-op or online to sneak past guards and complete levels. As you examine your game plan just before a large robbery, Rubber Bandits does a great job of breaking down each target site, showing you where the access points are, where the loot is hidden, and how to get to your quick escape when you get caught.
There are many different weapons and power-ups to find along the journey, in addition to the many stages. As an illustration, the person who is currently in last place might be given a suit of armour so they can catch up, and there is also an immortality star that allows you to carelessly run around. An ice pistol, one of the most potent weapons, can freeze adversaries, which might just be enough for you to escape with the entire sum of money for yourself. Even some stages contain bombs that can easily wipe out all progress because they spread everyone’s gathered goods over the arena. There is a lot to learn and experience, and it’s fun to watch what happens next as you play.
I find that this option is the most entertaining because the guards are just as awkward as you are. The characters you choose are all quite shaky, staying true to the game’s title, and it is this kind of physics-influenced mobility that gives each run its own exciting and distinctive feel. Even though there are many other cooperative party games available, this one stands out because it gives each player a unique handicap, namely the fact that none of you are particularly well-suited to pull off a sneaky theft.
One of the best cooperative multiplayer games is Rubber Bandits. You’re sure to have a blast with its extensive selection of absurd scenarios, whether you want to battle your pals locally or steal loot online.
Watching your own characters stumble around from place to place is already an amusing experience in and of itself, and any character from the overly obvious enormous yellow banana to the weird person in a bright red tracksuit can easily be noticed and captured by the police.
Regardless on how persistent you and your colleagues are in collecting the loot, each level lasts really no more than a minute. You’ll go to places like tightly guarded museums and the baggage claim at the airport in search of a huge payday while evading the law.
Of course, that doesn’t mean the gameplay isn’t engaging because each level is both bright and fun. Against the police, you can essentially defend yourself with anything at your disposal . With the ultimate objective of obtaining as much booty as you can, slipping past the irate police, and making a hasty getaway, anything is fair game, including freeze guns, boxing gloves, and over-the-top explosives.
In stages that are highly flammable, defy the laws of physics by releasing your bandits, and choose from a variety of classic heist themes, like The Bank, The Museum, The Dock, and more!
The problem is that even when you play as a team, you can still undermine one another because the person who has collected the most loot will receive the highest overall ranking and the ultimate bragging rights at the end of the mode. So please do your best to prevent each other from leaving the crime scene and leaving on your own, as it is every man for himself when it comes to stretchy lawless criminals.
Utilize all of your resources to defeat your rivals and obtain the items! Choose from 20 different weaponry, ranging from rocket launchers to baguette leaf blowers! Utilize all of your weapons to shatter, zap, or transform your adversaries into enormous ice cubes.
While playing, I did run into a few bugs where my character would occasionally get stuck between platforms or go about by itself. A fun, humorous, and completely ludicrous game like Rubber Bandits is ideal for game nights with family and friends. Since I felt like I had seen it all before, I didn’t have high expectations for it, but the game pleasantly surprised me with how much I like it.
