REVIEW : The Crackpet Show (PC)

You can become addicted to the game The Crackpet Show Early Access. Like everyone else with a 56K modem, I used to enjoy watching Happy Tree Friends back when the internet was still in its infancy in homes. I was brought back to those magnificent, gory days by the paintings here.

Both pictures and gameplay footage show a variety of mutant animals engaged in violent gunfights, with bullets flooding the game’s fictitious television studio. The venues can occasionally become as crowded as a sky filled with holiday fireworks, necessitating a lot of running to prevent getting hurt. The game’s cooperative matches can include up to four people, thus the screen can become incredibly crowded.

Crackpot Show, however, is not a true twin-stick shooter. You’ll aim at the closest enemy automatically rather than using the right analogue nub. By pressing one of the shoulder buttons, you can switch the focus to another enemy and lock it onto them. This ostensibly minor mathematical change makes a significant difference. So instead of trying to properly target enemies, you may concentrate on dodging the constant assault of hostile fire.

The design choice gives The Crackpet Show some added strategy in its implementation. You don’t have to shoot every opponent on a stage; you can lure them onto floor spikes or onto buzz saw routes. Vixa Games is aware that tricking adversaries into falling into traps might be more satisfying than just murdering them. This is frequently tapped upon by the game’s extensive arsenal of weapons. In addition to normal firearms, some weapons can shoot above the cover provided by the environment and one that causes an electrical spark between enemies.

Although Crackpet Show may stray from twin-stick gaming history, it is still very much a roguelike. You’ll come across a variety of various stage types on the multi-stage trip to each level’s monster. You face a swarm of opponents in normal stages. The ability to choose a new gun or a feature like larger projectiles, a chance of a critical, or the capacity to drop a mine while receiving damage are available as rewards for success in weapon and perk stages. Additionally, each contestant on Crackpet Show possesses a unique power that may be used for anything from healing to momentarily transforming into a tornado that destroys everything it touches.

The satirical humour in the game is what I find to be most enjoyable. Soon, the strength of each round of the parody reality TV programme increases, making it simple to lose a substantial amount of health while dodging the potent assault of enemy bullets. Thankfully, Crackpet Show allows you to vent your anger, so you can kill studio spectators or even destroy advertising banners that cover the arena walls. For the six boss showdowns that conclude each season, you’ll probably need some sort of pressure value. In comparison to eliminating the inferior creatures in the build-up to the climax, these are noticeably more challenging.

Currently, The Crackpet Show has a few problems. While the framerate remains consistent during the majority of normal fights, it can fluctuate during boss showdowns. While slowdowns during heated combat are frequently advantageous, they unquestionably work against the game’s pacing in this instance. Fortunately, the team is aware of the problem and is developing an upcoming patch. (The PC version doesn’t have the problem.) The load durations between each match should be reduced, perhaps. The pauses aren’t very long, but they happen frequently enough to disrupt your sensation of forward motion. Fortunately, persistence pays off as you’ll frequently be able to level up your unique skills and meta-game bonuses. The Crackpet Show’s influences are clear in the aesthetics, which harken back to Happy Tree Friends, and in the gameplay, which resembles someone working on an auto-targeting mod for The Binding of Isaac.
