World University of Design celebrates National Design Guru Day
World University of Design, a UGC recognized university and India’s first and only University dedicated to education in the creative domain is creating new benchmarks in the field of design and design education. The unique university celebrated a National Design Guru Day today. Organized with the support of the NID Alumni and the Association of Designers of India, World University of Design felicitated and bestowed the title of ‘Design Guru’ on Prof. Iftikhar-Mulk Chishti, Architect, Designer, Educator, and Design Evangelist on 23rd November, 2018. A felicitation ceremony attended by many stalwarts from the field of art, architecture & design was held to honor Professor Chishti on the National Design Guru Day. This day is celebrated annually at WUD on the birth anniversary of well-known design thinker and Guru Prof. M P Ranjan to pay tribute to the first generation of Design Gurus and highlight the role of Design Gurus who have pioneered design education and taught several generations of design students, thus, spearheading the design movement taking it to the forefront of education in India. WUD celebrated the occasion for the second consecutive year on campus
Prof. Iftikhar-mulk Chishti is a well-known architect and an educator. He is a graduate from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, and has the distinction of teaching at SPA for more than thirty years, where-in he has carved a niche for himself in disciplines of Architecture, Design theory, Urban design and Industrial design. Prof. Chishti has closely groomed several generations of Architects & designers graduating from SPA over the years. He has worked on diverse range of projects – from Civic buildings, Cultural spaces, Urban design proposals, Themed restaurants, Fashion boutiques, Residences, Furniture design, to Exhibitions and Design competitions. Since 2010, he is the convener of the public platform – Design x Design – an initiative of Alliance Francaise de Delhi and his Studio IF.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sanjay Gupta, Vice Chancellor of WUD said, “Every year we pay tribute to the first generation of Design Gurus, who kick-started the design education in India by celebrating the National Design Guru Day. On this memorable day we honour design legends and this year we have felicitated Prof. Iftikhar Mulk Chishti, Architect, Designer, Educator, Design Evangelist.
Design today has emerged as the horizontal that cuts across all verticals in the industry. It is one discipline that binds various departments, specializations, products and services. Because of this, in today’s world, it has become more essential than ever to have a practical knowledge of design, he added. The role of design educators therefore has become more important than ever. “
