A Pixel Story Review : – Pixel Story takes you to where it all started. The history of gaming has 8-bit games at its foundation. No matter how amazed we get with the games like Horizon: Zero Dawn or Uncharted 4, 8-bit games still continue to entertain us. Pixel Story may not be the most exciting of games out there, but it’s entertaining for sure.

The game skips 20 years of gaming history in a matter of seconds. The main character emerges from a white squared tennis ball and takes you on a journey of the gaming scenario of the late 70s and early 80s. After getting introduced to the surroundings by a strange character, you are off in the search of a hat stolen by a bird.

After grabbing the hat back you realise that it has magical powers. It can teleport you to the exact same location when dropped in mid-air. This ability is actually the key to progress through generations (or chapters) and the levels enclosed in them. You have to use your problem-solving skills along with this game mechanic to progress to the end of a generation and reach the generation bridge. From there you have to reach a future era of gaming through teleportation. You require crystals to unlock the gates which can be acquired by using your problem-solving skills to solve a puzzle. While others are given to you by locals after completing certain missions.

A Pixel Story

The main story of the Pixel Story is pretty much straight forward, although can become difficult at times. To keep players interested, the game has various branching storylines in the form of various characters needing your assistance. The story can be easily followed and the gameplay is easy enough to understand. The puzzles are intertwined with the mechanic of using a hat to teleport.

A Pixel Story

The developers of the game did a wonderful job in making the graphics accurate for each section of the game. The initial progress and the change in graphics feel like you are travelling through the time where systems and graphics are constantly evolving. Although the astuteness of the graphics fade away as you reach a recent era, this can be easily credited to the limited budget of the game.

The game has a very meaningful concept. The game introduces different mechanics with each generation but the story and the style remain essentially the same. The change that is evident and constant is the one in graphics. There could have been additions to the gameplay with the improvement in graphics, but the developers stuck with gameplay style of an 8-bit system.

A Pixel Story

With a limited budget, the developers have created a game that can keep you busy for hours. A Pixel Story is enjoyable, no matter what message it ultimately dishes out to you. The story is simple and binding and the puzzles can definitely help the gear of your brains move. Complete it bit by bit and you can pass any hurdle. For me, it is a 4/5.
