Who was Dandara?
Though Dandara’s adventure is abstract and fantastical, it draws inspiration from real-life historical figure Dandara dos Palmares, a freedom fighter in 17th century Brazil during its colonial period. Together with her husband, Zumbi, they defended the safe haven of Palmares from invaders looking to reclaim its inhabitants as slaves.
