REVIEW : Battletoads (XBOX One)

Where has Rash, Zitz and Pimple been for the last twenty-six years? What has become of them in all this time? Querries that we have all questioned personally more than once and that finally find an answer in the new Battletoads game. Why yes, if you are wondering, this new play directly answers those two questions. It is part of the magic of this long-awaited return that knows how to take with humour its history and its absence throughout these years. And from a narrative and comic perspective, it explains why we haven’t heard from them.

REVIEW : Battletoads (XBOX One)

All this comes wrapped in an adventure that hits directly on nostalgia. That allows us to return to those wonderful years where we were young and lived a thousand and one adventures. A title that maintains the purest essence of the saga, both at the playable level and at the development level.

Gameplay

Battletoads is a very fun title to play. It is one of those that you stay playing until the wee hours of the morning almost without realizing it. One of those games that know how to catch with its playability from the beginning. Yes, the plot helps, we won’t lie, but the gameplay is just great.

REVIEW : Battletoads (XBOX One)

Best of all, you don’t expect what you find in the game. Because not only is it a 2.5D beat’m up, but we also have a variety of classic games throughout all stages and acts of the game. Yes, the main system is the most classic and pure beat’m up. Us against the world and an infinity of enemies that sometimes seem to have no end. A succession of blows that depending on our ability will give us a higher score and a final grade (S, A, B). But also, we find phases of ships in the purest classic style, with an overhead perspective and various power-up.

REVIEW : Battletoads (XBOX One)

Battletoads is a game that is more enjoyed cooperatively, it has been thought looking for a way to fit the option of playing with up to 3 players in each game mode. In the beat’m up phases the solution is simple since each player manages one of the protagonists. In others, each wields a ship’s weapon. And in those in which there is no option to divide functions, all do the same, increasing the effectiveness of each action if the button presses are coordinated.

Duration

With Battletoads, we find an adventure that goes straight to the point. In our games for this analysis, it took an average of 7-8 hours to complete the four acts that make up the entire game. This duration corresponds to games with medium difficulty, called ‘Toad’ in the game.

The total duration will depend to a large extent on the difficulty that we select and the ability of each one with this type of game. With all this, we can estimate that the game can take us about 10 hours to get ahead, to which we would have to add another as many to complete it 100%, obtaining the six objects of each mission.

Of them, five are spread across the stage, while the sixth can be achieved by fulfilling a series of objectives in each stage. For example, finish in a certain time or get an A rank in all the combats of the scene.

Conclusion

Battletoads returns in style. A great job from Dlala Studios with this return of the franchise. A title that is taken with humour as well and that explains with the same tone why we have spent so many years without seeing the most powerful toads in the world of video games.
