REVIEW : Monstrum 2 (PC)

Monstrum 2 is an asymmetric PvP game for those looking to push the boundaries of survival horror. Play as a team of up to four human prisoners attempting to escape a decaying sea stronghold, or as one of the numerous terrible monstrosities hunting them down.

Navigate a complicated, randomly created metal maze that changes layout, riddles, items, and obstacles with each playtime, making each match dynamic for humans and monsters equally.

Thoughts

Monstrum 2 is a 4v1 multiplayer-only horror game in which you play as one of (currently) three monsters hunting down prisoners or as a group of prisoners attempting to survive on a randomly generated sea fortress. The prisoners’ goal is to trigger fuseboxes that require puzzles to be completed in order to be activated. Some require things, some require a code, some require keycards, and some are blocked by something that must be destroyed or pushed/pulled. Following that, they must repair their escape vehicle, either a submarine or a helicopter, and reach them before being captured by the monster.

What exactly do you do as a Monster?

As Monster, you try to track down captives and prevent them from completing their missions and escape either murdering them all or holding them off until their time runs out. Each monster has three distinct talents that aid in the location or killing of the prisoners, as well as in manoeuvrability.

What are your responsibilities as a prisoner?

As a prisoner, you must first activate fuseboxes, then power up (a) generator(s) (the number of which depends on the number of inmates), and last fix the escape path in order to escape. They must dodge the monster by hiding and sneaking about (you may utilise lockers and boxes to hide) or running away from the monster and attempting to get a lead by exploiting your environment or particular items such as the bulb camera to flash the creature for a brief second.

The map is made up of 12 superblocks, two of which are randomly selected and structured each round. In addition, there is either a submarine region beneath the powerplant superblock (which spawns every round) or a helicopter area above. Each superblock includes different fuse boxes in different regions, always more than needed, to prevent the monster from camping the goals.

Performance is significantly better than in the closed Beta, but the developers still have a long way to go to get good and steady performance. True, good equipment is required to play the game. So, if you’re playing on lower-tier hardware, expect minor frame drops and avoid playing on high settings. It will, however, improve over time. It was just made available in early access.

Overall state of the game

The game has some rough edges, which is to be anticipated from an early access product. The game’s performance, stability, and bugs will be improved over time, and new content will be introduced. The developers intend to add additional creatures, captives, cosmetics, and skins along EA that you can unlock by playing the game. Nothing is restricted by a paywall.

review-monstrum-2-pcAlso just a quick thing at the end: This is NOT a Dead by Daylight clone. Yes, it shares the same asymmetrical genre (it can scale from 1v1 up to 4v1) but it is completely different in terms of gameplay, environment and overall style.
