REVIEW : Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition (PC)

NONGUNZ a title that was seen precisely on PC a long time ago (appeared in 2017). And it does so with a version that is quite faithful to the original and that retains its main attributes and characteristics intact, although the developers have taken the opportunity to integrate a couple of interesting playable novelties that give their work even more value and replayability. . A reissue that has been baptized with the name of Doppelganger Edition and that once again enjoys a remarkable overall quality.

REVIEW : Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition (PC)

And what does this game consist of? Well, oh, surprise! It is a new roguelike, a genre that is almost more fashionable than battle royale lately, and that is to say. But, fortunately, it is a production that has been graced by a great personality and that is one of the few exponents within its genre that are immediately recognizable for multiple aspects, including its curious aesthetic line and graphic arrangement in general. But we will talk about that later because now we have to focus on what the title offers us in terms of playable matter.

A roguelike in black and white

The protagonist of this adventure is a character that is difficult to describe and who is a kind of skeleton that, in the beginning, does not even have ahead. And what should we do assuming his personality? Well, meddle in a kind of infernal and changing cathedral inside which all kinds of horrible and ugly creatures inhabit that, as you can imagine, will do everything possible (and sometimes the impossible too) to finish us off. That is, because from now on we warn you that we are facing a very difficult title to overcome, even more than is usual in this kind of productions, so those who are not used to this type of games are going to have a purple time most likely simply trying to get through a couple of screens that make up each level.

REVIEW : Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition (PC)

Precisely, the composition and structure that shape each phase are one of the highlights of all the elements that make up the adventure. Each level is made up of a specific number of screens that, in some cases, communicate with each other, being necessary to go through them to reach our goal, that is, at the end boss that awaits us as usual in this type of titles. But of course, achieving such a goal is not exactly easy given that in addition to the monsters that swarm around there, the sets also present certain traps and obstacles that damage our character and hinder their progress. Fortunately, our hero has certain abilities that allow him to overcome (or at least try) so much adversity, from the possibility of collecting healing cards and heads to dress (and incidentally obtain unique abilities) to, most importantly, equip himself with increasingly powerful weapons beyond his simple pistol with which he begins his adventure.

To this is added its mobility, more than outstanding, since in addition to running and jumping it can also perform the now-classic dashes, manoeuvres that allow it to quickly dodge rivals and their attacks as well as a platform more dynamically. The only thing that has not finished convincing us in this regard is the issue of shooting upwards, which can only be done by pressing a button in which our character automatically slides while pointing in that direction, which is not the most appropriate way. needs to perform this task. Therefore and in general, the title has simple and direct gameplay which, in addition, and thanks to its combos system, encourages us to play very quickly, shaping a very interesting title … which has also received two very attractive novelties in the form of additional modalities. On the one hand, it is now possible to play in local cooperative mode, which seems like a complete success. And to further increase its useful life, a new Arena mode has also been incorporated, which is not the best in the world (or the most original resource) but adds more hours of additional gameplay to those users who want to squeeze even more of this production.

REVIEW : Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition (PC)

As for its aesthetic approach, as you can see it is a production that draws attention for its chromatic commitment in black and white. The size of the sprites may be a little tiny for some players, but the design of these has also seemed successful … although there is no doubt that in general everything is shown too simply. Some more detail would not have hurt, although at least it should be noted that, as a good roguelike, every time we lose our lives (or leave the cathedral premises), the levels are generated randomly. And as for the sound, in this case, it seems to us that it is the least achieved area of the entire title, with effects that simply comply and melodies that go too unnoticed.

review-nongunz-doppelganger-edition-pcGiven that in its day it passed without pain or glory in its original instalment for PC, this reissue of Nongunz seems like a success to try to attract the attention of players again, in this case of a broader spectrum of them because it reaches more platforms. Of course, we are facing a game with a clear niche orientation given its general characteristics and, especially, due to its high level of difficulty, which can be an insurmountable barrier for a large group of users. For the rest, it is a very entertaining and well-recreated work within its style, which has also been ingratiated with a great personality.
