REVIEW : Okami HD (PS4/ PS4 Pro)
Okami was first released on PS2 in 2006, then later it was ported to Wii in 2008 and brought back in HD for PS3 in 2012. Now, it is moving into 4K era on PC, PS4 and XBOX one. You may think, so many re-releases may have resulted into people losing interest or the game not holding the test of time, but it is totally opposite here. While there are no new features for third generation re-release but this is in fact the best version yet.
Okami is very artistic and minimalistic in its art style and gameplay. Think of it as a role-playing game with a wolf as your character.
You Control Amaterasu who is goddess of sun. You bring life back to a dead world, take on quests while uncovering secrets while coloring the entire world. Plus, there is a bark button, so bark away.
The biggest gameplay feature still is celestial brush. It is part of every puzzle as you use the brush to paint essential elements in the game. It is unique and most fun element of the game and ties right into the water color art-style.
The battles also involve the brush. Mostly the fights are straight forward but the brush provides the finishing blow. A simple stroke of brush ends all the fights with artistic beauty.
The game art-style still hold today and with today’s technology it looks stunning, it does not look like the game is 11 years old. The water colors and Cel Shaded graphics bring the world to life and it is a sight to behold. You will stop and pause to admire it plenty of times during gameplay.
There is literally nothing new in this 3rd release of the very same game. The game has been brought to PC for the first time, which enables 4K graphics and with right console and display you can play Okami HD in 4K.
The DS4 touch pad enables brush strokes and some toggles you can turn on or off to adjust graphics. Beyond that, there is nothing new in this game content wise.
Don’t take all this as a negative as Okami is a timeless classic and we are glad more people will be able to experience it in all its glory. You will have to utilize the save points and get adjusted to the controls but it’s all worth it.
