REVIEW : Sniper Elite III (STEAM)

Sniper Elite 3 is the third iteration in the series Sniper Elite by Rebellion Games. It is based on a world war 2 setting in Africa, which is kinda unique for new gen consoles. Sniper Elite 3 is prequel to Sniper Elite V2. It is set several years before the story of Sniper Elite V2.

Players once again find themselves in the shoes of elite OSS sniper Karl Fairburne as he takes on numerous missions in an attempt to ward off enemy forces.

Instead of war torn towns of world war setting, this game take the players to the unforgiving yet exotic North Africa. Here deserts and jungles form most of the surrounding.

This allows far more open maps than the corridor styled maps in previous games. The large jungle areas allow numerous ways to attack an enemy.

To attack an enemy you have to locate them first. You use the binoculars to tag enemies, which makes them visible behind obstacles and makes it easier to attack them. It is not realistic but this game is not about realism, so it works.

Tag as many upcoming enemies you want, easily plan your attack without them ever knowing.

This brings in the first decision making aspect of the game. Choose to go among long grass or make your way to the rocky hills,  totally your choice. Take out enemies from a distance or enter the camp and take them down one by one,  again totally your choice. Hoe to approach the enemy, how to kill the enemy, choices that matter and the choices that are implemented well in some of the modern games. The stealthy approach is a viable job here, the “stealth till you are found and then blast away”  approach seldom works here, as you more often then not find yourself dead.

Sniping is as satisfying as it can be and along with slow motion bullet cam with the gruesome X RAY vision of your enemies body parts and bones breaking, sniping can’t be any better.

Sometimes when you are sure that your bullet will hit the enemy,  it misses and your position is compromised and enemy reacts to the gun shot. Lack of melee attacks make the game frustrating is such situations as you have no other option then to run and hide and pray that you don’t get shot from the back.

Sadly, the AI has not been improved much,  something which Rebellion Games wanted to improve upon. It is amazing how close you can get to the enemy without it realizing that you are there.

Even firing from a long distance your location can be discovered,  so you must disguise your location with other things which can make loud noises like generators. Usually you can escape detection after firing a shot by ducking and hiding. The enemies report all clear soon after.

Sniper Elite 3 is more arcade styles than simulation, I think it for the best. You can have loads of fun with Sniper elite 3 and it’s forgetful AI.

After clearing it’s huge levels which take about an hour or so to complete, there is a feeling of accomplishment of clearing each and every enemy of that round. Take your time and get accustomed to game’s slow pace. Kill of every German one by one and you will feel like a bad-ass ghost.
