REVIEW : Xenogunner (PC)
In the future year of 2011, Zeta Reak, kind, gentle king of the Xenolians, is defeated by a powerful tyrant called the “Xenogunner”.
The Xenogunner is a magical being capable of many terrifying feats, using a power known as “Xenonature”, powerful energy that grants one trained in the use of it many elemental and non-elemental powers.
Zeta, too, is gifted with the skills of Xenonature. It’s up to Zeta to overthrow the Xenogunner and reclaim the throne……but is the Xenogunner the one pulling the strings…?
Intense Boss Battles!
Xenogunner is an intense boss-focused run-and-gun platformer based on games from the days of 16-bit consoles. With the addition of facilities like mouse aiming and highly customizable pressure settings, we believe that we’ve truly renewed a classic game genre that started decades-long in the past.
The stages are short, the bosses are challenging, varied, and tense, and we give you as many lives as you’ll need… because you’ll need as numerous lives as you can get! Can Zeta best the Xenogunner…? Only you can guide him to victory!
Xenogunner is fun. Like, ridiculously fun. It’s very polished and it’s easy to jump into and play. It’s a good length, something you can finish your first run of in the span of an afternoon and part of your evening, and it’s also very replayable. Besides the levels themselves being worth playing multiple times, two characters play differently from one another, and a customizable boss gauntlet available to offer some more content after you’re done with the base game.
The game’s art style is gorgeous, the music is fitting, and the bosses are unique and fun to play against. It feels like a proper modernization of the genre, with good quality of life features alongside polished controls and UI, while still having authentic gameplay.
Xenogunner is a challenging game, but it’s well-balanced and the default difficulty settings are enjoyable for people like me who aren’t very good at these kinds of games, while still providing a challenge for others with more experience. There are detailed difficulty settings that allow you to make the game easier, but also allow you to make it harder to a ridiculous extent if you find the default settings too easy or want to go for a challenge run. There are a few settings dedicated to accessibility as well – you’re able to disable screen shaking effects, make the game brighter, and reduce the overall speed of the game if you want or need to.
