Developers from Perfect Day Studio, known for creating the critically acclaimed game Insomnia: Theater in the Head, are ready to share exciting news. Their interactive fiction called A Perfect Day will get an official English language version, which brings this unique story closer to players from all around the world. The demo is available now, and a full release is coming soon.

In A Perfect Day, you play as a student who just started the day that will change his life forever. The story began on December 31st, 1999 – just a day before the New Year’s holiday break. There were no indications that this day was special, but as we all know, life is unpredictable, and our little hero will get a perfect chance to learn this universal truth the hard way.

Developers behind A Perfect Day admit that the inspiration for the game came from the great works of Jorge Luis Borges, Francois Truffaut, Quentin Tarantino, and Jia Zhangke. They describe their project as a title that honors and affirms the legacy of visual novels. A deep story and narrative system play first fiddle during our adventure, in which we will discover secrets held by friends, family, and neighbors. It starts innocently as we only try to give a Christmas card to one of our classmates.
Gameplay, as befits an interactive fiction, relies on having conversations, observing diverse surroundings, and connecting threads that lead to the main events of our perfect day. One attempt will rather not be enough. If you want to get out of this endless time loop, you must pay attention to all the details which will help you to control incidents of this day. Players who are ready to experience A Perfect Day will get a chance to test their skills at a few mini-games that you can play on Gamicom – a console and a best friend of many teenagers.
Thanks to the new version, English-speaking players can see what China looked like by the end of the 20th century. This makes an ideal opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture. Being a part of the game events lets players experience something different in the best sense of the word.
A Perfect Day – game features:
⚬ New time-loop gameplay – unlike Groundhog Day’s time-loop narrative, A Perfect Day allows players to repeat the last day of 1999 without the memories from the past loops. You can explore the secrets of those around you, plan your daily activities, and make your own choices. Bid farewell to the regrets of the past, fulfill everyone’s dream, and welcome the new year with fireworks. Inspired by the storytelling of Jorge Luis Borges, adventure and truth are awaiting you.
⚬ A Story-Rich Game – multiple stories and elaborate designs are presented in the game. The four main stories are interpreted in a narrative network structure and intersect in an infinite time loop. Besides, there are many side stories waiting to be experienced, such as growing pains of friends, confusion and innocence of teenage love, how to deal with the father’s temper tantrums, etc. Face the problems head-on and figure out how to turn the situations around.
⚬ Complex Characters – the know-it-all with glasses, the rich kid who keeps up trends, the Study Rep you have a crush on, the neighbor granny who seems to know something special about you, and the crazy homeless man who keeps talking about aliens… What secrets lie beneath their surface? Follow and come to know a diverse cast of characters and rewrite their stories.
A Journey to China in the 1990s – the 1990s was a time of exchanges and rapid development between China and the West. The game depicts China in the 1990s in a unique crayon hand-painted style, well-reflecting the Chinese lifestyle in the late 90s. Some “old things” in the game also give players a feeling of nostalgia, reliving the beauty of the things in the past.
Inspired by the best – charming graphic design intensifies the experience coming from the story. Developers proudly admit that the game was inspired by the great work of artists such as Jorge Luis Borges, Francois Truffaut, Quentin Tarantino, and Jia Zhangke.
Classic Fun Mini Games – a variety of mini games are designed in the game, such as the Mini 4WD race, the “Gamicom” console, the arcade, etc. Through these, players can enjoy the toys and games that were popular in China in the 1990s. In the game you can assemble a powerful Mini 4WD for yourself to beat new tracks and all kinds of rivals, and finally become the town’s king of Mini 4WD. You can also collect game cartridges and play mini-games on the “Gamicom” console, which might unlock some hidden stories or get you on the “National Gamicom Rankings”.
A Perfect Day demo, which features the first day of the game, is now available in English on Steam.
