Dallas Fuel star is recognized as player with the greatest positive impact on community
Yeonghan “SP9RK1E” Kim, DPS player for the Dallas Fuel, is the recipient of the 2021 Dennis Hawelka Award. The award is one of the top regular season honors in all esports, given out annually to the player in the Overwatch League who has had the greatest positive impact on fans and the gaming community. Previous winners include former Dallas Fuel fan favorite Pongphop “Mickie” Rattanasangchod, as well as player-turned-caster Scott “Custa” Kennedy (formerly of the Valiant and Dallas Fuel) and Caleb “McGravy” McGarvey (formerly of the Valiant, Mayhem, and Team Envy).
Known for his iconic dances and infectious smile, SP9RK1E helped brighten the day of many around the globe whether appearing on streams or in front of the Dallas Fuel home crowd at the team’s live events. A fierce competitor, SP9RK1E leads the league in damage dealt and comes in second for most eliminations, helping the Dallas Fuel finish atop the regular season standings in the West division.
“There is never a moment that SP9RK1E isn’t being himself and trying to bring joy to others,” said Mat Taylor, general manager of the Dallas Fuel. “His positive attitude bleeds into his teammates and coaches and has played a role in keeping our spirits high during a challenging and successful year. He’s a fan favorite, but always takes time to acknowledge and interact with supporters and the community.”
SP9RK1E and the Dallas Fuel are currently competing in the Overwatch League Playoffs, with a total prize pool of $3,200,000 on the line.
The Dennis Hawelka Award is named for Dennis “INTERNETHULK” Hawelka. A former player and coach for the Envy Overwatch roster during their period as one of the best Overwatch teams in the world, Hawelka was a mentor to many professional players and a friend to all who knew him. The Overwatch League named the award in his honor to recognize individuals that carry the same spark, motivate those around them and make the community a better place.
