The latest VR creation by ARTE France, Atlas V and Archer’s Mark immerses the viewer into 38 minutes of nuclear terror

| BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. On January 13, 2018, every inhabitant of Hawaii received a chilling text message at the same time. Chaos ensued and panic spread through the population for 38 long minutes. Where to go for shelter? What would be left of their community if a nuclear attack actually occurred? How can the federal government of the United States pursue nuclear policies that threaten the entire world population every day? The alert was eventually refuted: an emergency management agency staff member had apparently made a mistake… A human error, but an alert deemed credible in a very tense situation between the United States and North Korea, with Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un having engaged shortly before in a verbal escalation in a context of atomic threat. 1.4 million people were suddenly confronted with a very real and urgent threat, irreversibly altering their worldview. |

| As Kauai resident Cynthia Lazaroff would later say, “The warning was false, but the nuclear threat is real…[this] is not a scenario, nor a video game…we experienced it personally, we felt the terror.“ Although nothing happened that day, everything changed. On The Morning You Wake (to the End of the World) is a virtual reality documentary that captures the voices of people who experienced the real and imminent threat of nuclear weapons, brought to life in the words of poet and activist Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio. For the majority of the population, the use of atomic force is unthinkable, unimaginable and out of our control. On The Morning You Wake makes this threat real and illustrates through the experience of the citizens of Hawaii the fundamental injustice of a world held hostage by nuclear weapons. |
