PREVIEW : Chaos Galaxy 2 (PC)

So far, Chaos Galaxy 2 has been a fantastic game. This evaluation will contrast the second and first games.

Chaos Galaxy 2 is a grand strategy game in the vein of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Advance War, Super Robot War, and other similar titles.

You can build hundreds of ships and robots, designate commanders to lead your fleets, battle enemy fleets, and capture hostile planets.

By researching aliens, you can even create a biomechanical legion.

Powerful commanders can also utilise several methods to win outside of combat, or use tactical skills to turn the tide on the battlefield.

The heroes have a wide range of ties.

Civil strife, the discovery of new weaponry, selling lost technology from the roaming ark, enlisting the greatest mercenaries or being robbed by the most heinous flight gang

In the galaxy, there are a dozen huge factions and even more local minor armies. You can utilise diplomatic measures to strengthen your allies and vassals while weakening your enemies’ relationships.

A player who understands diplomacy can easily gain a victory that a dozen fleets cannot.

Each faction has its policy tree, through which it can obtain its five distinct troops as well as dozens of economic and military consequences.

You can also construct strong biomechanical units by killing aliens, obtain lost technologies by travelling the ark, and obtain enemy blueprints by destroying their factions.

The factions in the game are divided into eight separate faction kinds, each with its own unique play rule and special planetary architecture.

Imperial factions can compete for imperial official positions to boost their troop limit in the fleet and the commander’s ability. During the conflict, pirate factions might seize the enemy’s fleeing ships and armaments. Mercenaries and assassins can accept mercenary and assassin quests. The AI group can steal and examine the blueprints of other factions. Entrepreneurs can trade and invest. The revolutionary side can use revolutionary propaganda to encourage rebellion in enemy worlds. Aliens can consume planets to absorb life genes.

If you select other factions, you will have a completely different game experience.

The vast empire that had governed the galaxy for a millennium was destroyed by an extraterrestrial impact. Imperial admirals, pirates, merchants, cultists, mercenaries, and colonists clashed for dominion.

At the same time, rogue AI legions and extraterrestrial hive fleets are mercilessly preying on the human population. Only a true hero can steer humanity through this Armageddon.

Start your epic campaign now, and utilise your strategy and courage to put an end to the chaos in the Galaxy!

The depth of the economic system is greater than in previous games, with building and development now having a greater impact through the construction of specific buildings in orbit and on the planet’s surface. This is a good thing; anyone with a brain can get acclimated to it in a few turns and all the information they need is right there.

This time around, there are a lot more characters or generals, and it serves the game quite well. Each has a brief biography, and character development is intriguing, though I haven’t examined it as thoroughly as I’d like. The same is true for fleets, etc. It’s a lot of fun to build a certain fleet composition based on a character’s and faction’s strengths.

Tactical Combat itself is enjoyable; I’m not generally a fan of turn-based games, but this one manages to entice me. Managing energy with support ships and determining whether to use shields or dodge with my Tiger Knights. It’s fun, and there’s usually a good selection. The Strategic Map also provides you with a plethora of options for expansion, including slow and quick paths.

Simultaneously, some of the polish from previous games has been lost, but this is an early access product. I miss the animations for units during combat (in advanced wars/fire emblem style), which gave the game character and piqued my interest. I understand how difficult it is, especially as a lone developer, and this decision was made owing to the sheer amount of new units. But, if feasible, it would be nice to see this return one day in the future. However, the simpler animations on the overhead map accomplish the job, and it’s not a huge deal.

Another thing that would be wonderful is more occurrences in the style of Nobunaga’s desire. The ones we have do an excellent job at providing us with a notion of the traits of various factions and officers, but it’d be nice to have things happen more frequently in the event panel to further fill out the universe. The world-building as it stands has a really solid basis; each side is fun to play and has a distinct concept that is mirrored in its mechanics, aesthetic, and theme. The setting is intriguing, and the lore is appealing.

It’s hardly Legend of Galactic Heroes, but it does a good job of capturing the intensity of warlord ages. The problem is that it makes me want to know more!!! Thus, adding additional events, in the long run, would be fantastic, even if they were unimportant officer chats. I’d like to learn more about them and their interactions with one another. This would be even greater if mechanics were included, but that is probably asking too much. In summary, the story is good, and I’d like to hear more of it. (Please read the Chaos Galaxy web fiction)

Finally, the Alien AI needs to be rebalanced, and this should happen much later in the game (maybe the first aliens being small scouting forces or something). But that’s all I have to say about that. The game has a wonderful base, and there is obviously potential for improvement- but the fact that it was done by a single developer is already incredibly amazing, and I look forward to the game’s future. I hope it can earn the developer enough money to form a team because if he can do it on his own, I can only imagine what he could do with greater resources.

To summarise, if you enjoy RTK, Nobunaga’s ambition, Gundam & Gihrens Greed, SRW, LOGH, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, and any turn-based tactical game or SRPG, you will enjoy this game. While I have my criticisms, the fact remains that what you have here is a game that blows most of its (much larger budget and personnel) competition out of the water.
