PREVIEW : Heads Will Roll: Downfall (PC)

In the tactical role-playing game and visual novel Heads Will Roll: Downfall, you take on the character of a mediaeval soldier. One of the hundreds of nameless foot soldiers whom the English monarch dispatched to Scotland to quell a rebellion

The protagonist and player will have to deal with a variety of hazardous situations as unintentional participants in this war, meet great friends and lethal adversaries, and make many difficult decisions along the way.

Downfall’s fighting system has been updated and overhauled from its predecessor, Heads Will Roll. The player will be forced to carefully examine each decision he makes in turn-based tactical engagements. Each of these elements—physical characteristics, weapon skills, weariness, wounds, injuries, armour coverage, weapon type, and length—contributes to the result of any combat to some extent, giving it greater tactical depth.

The protagonist of the tale is a young soldier who enlists in the military in an effort to elude capture for a crime he did not commit. He is in for a dangerous journey and has the chance to clean up his name with blood so that he can either return home no longer a runaway but a hero—or go missing on endless battlefields.

Who claimed that romanticism is absent from war? While battling not only for gold but also for the attention of a stunning girl who is adamant about winning your heart, you will frequently have to choose between your feelings and your obligations.

dozens of real mediaeval weapons, such as crossbows, swords, spears, axes, and throwing daggers. Based on the specific traits of each character, they all have unique traits, attacks, and working principles. Each weapon has advantages and disadvantages that must be taken into account if you want to prevail in combat.

Every decision the player makes will have an impact on how he is perceived by his fellow soldiers and important individuals. Gain the esteem of your fellow soldiers, and they will come to your aid repeatedly. In the middle of an army, alone, if you mess up your relationship with them.

This game is a jewel as long as you approach it with the appropriate attitude. I’ve invested about 15 hours into it thus far, and it’s free. I eventually completed everything in the toughest setting, but there are still several achievements that need to be unlocked.

The appropriate mindset is simply what I mean. Just think of it as a rogue lite. Play in the most challenging setting as well. This is due to the fact that using the toughest difficulty setting is the only method to raise your profile level. You will experience a lot of death if you do this, but your profile level will gradually increase, and each new character you make will start off stronger and stronger.

Yes, the RNG may seem terrible the first few times you play it, and yes, you will die and complain that the game is too difficult. Certainly, I did! The end-game credit screen will eventually appear, so keep moving forward.

I’d rate the game as a 7 or 8 overall. For me, the drawbacks are little. Starting can be difficult and time-consuming, and the UI might use some quality-of-life improvements. Simple things like the ability to purchase multiples of the same items simultaneously. Perhaps some shortcut keys would be preferable to constantly using the mouse.

Therefore, download and play this game! Just begin it with the knowledge that it is a rogue-lite and you will have to experiment a lot. It’s entertaining if you’re willing to do it.
