PREVIEW : Trigon: Space Story (PC)
Trigon: Space Story is influenced by FTL, but it adds to the model with various new mechanics, including two-player cooperative play.
FTL: Faster Than Light is one of our favourite indie games from the last ten years. That hasn’t altered, but Trigon: Space Story may be able to supplant FTL for those seeking a little more.
Sernur. Tech, a collaboration of 11 players who looked at FTL and thought to themselves, “We can do better,” has created Trigon: Space Story.
Rather than moving at the rapid speed of escaping an opposing fleet while fighting continual space battles, the plot moves more leisurely. As a result, Trigon moves at a slower pace. There is space combat, but there’s also exploration, side tasks, and various plots that cast you as either a murderous pirate or an interstellar goodwill ambassador.
Space conflicts are fought by two spacecraft trading laser and photon torpedo blasts, same as in FTL. In addition, you can deploy boarding parties to take over a rivalship without harming any cargo it may be carrying, or you can target certain enemy subsystems to terminate combat swiftly.
Even though Trigon is still in Early Access on Steam, there is plenty of material to get you started. Over 20 captain abilities, 20 spacecraft, 70 weapon systems, hundreds of equipment modules, 45 passive crew perks, and over 20 captain abilities. There are currently only two main storylines available in the game, but more are planned as it progresses through its early access stage. There are also numerous side quests to keep you occupied in this procedurally generated environment.
What about the co-op, though? According to the clip, an online co-op means that two ship commanders join forces to take on the galaxy. Of course, because there are two ships versus one, ship combat is likely to be substantially simpler. Still, perhaps Trigon balances enemies to account for the benefit of having a companion.
Trigon: Space Story is presently available on Steam and will be available in early access for the next two years. During this period, they’ll add more ships, weapons, equipment, abilities, sidequests, and plot campaigns to the game, as well as whatever else the fans request.
