REVIEW : Brotato (PC)

Brotato is about to become the PC game of the summer. What really makes Brotato stand out, though, is its shockingly deep sense of character customization that makes each run feel totally unique. That’s clear right from the start of a run, as each potato hero has a very specific set of perks that call for a different playstyle.

Top-down action games have made a resurgence in popularity, with a few of them among the best indie games of 2022.

PC and mobile games in the genre have provided experiences that are easy to pick up and play, with roguelite games consistently challenging players to best their previous runs. Mowing down countless foes with fast-paced action and an adorable art style is something Brotato excels at. Brotato challenges players to survive waves of alien attackers while earning new weapons, characters, and items along the way. Players are capable of holding up to six different weapons at a time, and equip items that provide helpful buffs, challenging debuffs, and unique special abilities. All of the game’s action can be performed with a single joystick, which sounds simple, but the game’s combat quickly grows more layered and is its best trait. Unique Customizations Alter Combat Significantly Rounds of Brotato can last up to 30 minutes, and they begin with players choosing from dozens of unlockable characters, starting weapons, and the run’s Danger level. Completing a run will unlock the next difficulty level up to Danger 5. Character classes like Mutant and Old both support buffs that help make combat a little easier, but they also have debuffs that make enemies faster or shop items more expensive. Some characters are only able to wield unarmed weapons. In contrast, others can specialize with other specific types like ranged or elemental weapons. Certain combinations of weapons and character abilities help players feel unbeatable during the first few rounds, but that doesn’t last long. Weapons damage, stat buffs, and debuffs all stack on top of one other, helping the player’s potato quickly grow almost unrecognizable after a few rounds’ worth of upgrades.
