REVIEW : Dark Souls II (STEAM)

2020

Dark Souls 2 is an Action RPG developed by From Software and Published by From Software in Japan and Namco Bandai for rest of the world. Dark Souls 2 is based in a fantasy world Drangleic. Dark Souls 2 is a deserving successor to Dark Souls as it improves upon the predecessor in many ways.

From Software have made some noteworthy changes in the game from Dark Souls. The first thing you’ll notice is that slain monsters reappear only a few times and not like a continuous cycle in last game.

This makes the game a little less brutal and even adds some amount of realism. When you die, you lose souls, but you won’t be able to retrace your steps more than once to get them back. If the monsters in  an area are on last stage of regeneration then you should take extra care, because if you die, the experience and the loot you netted will soon cease to exist. It reduces the difficulty just a little bit but also gives a satisfaction of slaying those monsters.

Majula, a small coastal town will be your frequent hub apart from the bonfires you visit to rest and take potions . Majula is dynamic in nature, as you revisit it over the course of the game, it changes in interesting ways. Often, rescued NPCs will appear there hours later to offer gratitude and services, while early on the town is where you’ll do most of your shopping. Eventually, you gain ways to conduct your dealings elsewhere, but even so, Majula is the only place to level up, so visiting Majula will always be on your checklist.

Fast travel makes the frequent check ins easier. The player can hop between any discovered bonfires in the game to fast travel through the discovered bon fires. The world of dark souls 2 is expansive and fast travel helps traverse it. Villages and outcropping form the coast and the network of caves are like puzzle.

Dark souls 2 runs better then it’s predecessor on PC, played it 60fps at 1050p on gtx580 and first gen core i7. The game occasionally shines on graphics front when the lighting is right and the environment.  The textures most of the time look blotted and muddy. Most of the areas are dark and grey but may be that’s the look From Software were going for. The game does look better then Dark Souls 1 but not by much, hope modding community changes that.

Dark Souls 2 world’s biggest presence are the bosses and they surely don’t disappoint . They will crush your moral of wanting to face the next boss as the current boss will annihilate you. You will die atleast once at each boss even if you prepare hard. This can get frustrating at times. But instead of quitting it will make you think hard and make new strategies. After trying and implementing each strategy, there would be one which would help you defeat the boss. The feeling of victory which you get after defeating a boss in this game is immense.
