Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 – Turbocharged is the latest installment in the popular racing game series based on the iconic toy cars. The game was released on October 10, 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Stadia. In this review, I will focus on the PS5 version of the game and share my impressions of its graphics, gameplay, features, and overall quality.
Graphics
The game looks stunning on the PS5, with crisp and colorful visuals that capture the essence of the Hot Wheels brand. The game runs at a smooth 60 frames per second and supports 4K resolution and ray tracing, making the cars and tracks look realistic and detailed. The game also features dynamic lighting and shadows, weather effects, and particle effects that add to the immersion and variety of the environments. The game has over 100 licensed Hot Wheels cars to choose from, each with their own unique design and performance. The cars are customizable with different paint jobs, decals, wheels, and accessories that can be unlocked by playing the game or purchased with in-game currency. The game also has a photo mode that allows you to take screenshots of your cars and tracks from different angles and filters.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 – Turbocharged is fast-paced and fun, with responsive and intuitive controls that make it easy to drift, boost, jump, and perform stunts. The game has several modes to choose from, such as Career Mode, Quick Race, Online Multiplayer, Split-Screen Co-op, and Track Builder. Career Mode is the main mode of the game, where you can compete in various events and challenges across different locations and themes, such as a skate park, a carnival, a volcano, a space station, and more. Each location has multiple tracks that are full of twists, turns, loops, ramps, obstacles, and shortcuts that test your skills and creativity. You can also collect coins and tokens along the way that can be used to unlock new cars and parts. Career Mode also has boss races that pit you against legendary Hot Wheels vehicles such as Twin Mill, Bone Shaker, Shark Bite, and more.
Quick Race is a mode where you can race against AI opponents or your friends on any track you want. You can customize the race settings such as the number of laps, the difficulty level, the weather conditions, and the power-ups. Power-ups are special items that you can pick up on the track and use to gain an advantage or hinder your rivals. Some of the power-ups include rockets, magnets, oil slicks, turbo boosters, and more.
Online Multiplayer is a mode where you can race against up to 12 players from around the world on any track you want. You can join or create public or private lobbies and chat with other players using voice or text. You can also participate in ranked matches that affect your global leaderboard position and earn rewards based on your performance.
Split-Screen Co-op is a mode where you can play with up to four players on the same screen using local controllers. You can choose any mode and track you want and enjoy some friendly competition or cooperation with your friends or family.
