REVIEW : Murder Is Game Over (PC)

passing of a well-known game designer. Players assume the role of Guy, who must solve this evil whodunit with the help of his dependable dog Cleo.

Scripted murder is Lord Russell Gallant, a well-known game designer and the man of Paladin Dream, passes away in the opening moments of Game Over after a sizable gargoyle fell from the roof of his home, Castle Ludwig. It becomes more and more obvious as Guy and Cleo carry out their inquiry that there has been some foul play, that there are many possible motives, and that someone is a killer. Through questioning and investigation, the story is revealed in fragments, gradually revealing the wider picture, and culminates in a gathering of suspects for a major reveal in true murder mystery style.

Gameplay

The investigation is Murder is Game Over’s main goal, and depending on the work at hand, the player can swap between acting as Guy or Cleo. Guy may speak with each of the eight suspects and question them about the events that have occurred and the evidence that has been found, and Cleo can smell out information that a human would be unable to find. There is a map that shows all of the many regions that can be explored, as well as hints to guide gamers. There is a lot of material to keep track of, but fortunately, the case file has a list of leads and potential suspects.

The game also includes a small number of mini-games, such as a treasure hunt with riddles, 30 doggy bags to discover and collect, and a playable arcade version of Paladin Dream. These mini-games are a lot of fun to try to finish and have associated Steam achievements.

Styling

Due to its 2D pixel visuals and electronic soundtrack, Murder is Game Over has a highly vintage aesthetic. The artwork combines sombre, subdued colour palettes with sporadic pops of colour and atmospheric lighting, and it is nicely detailed. From the interior of the castle to the woodland and mountain trail, there are a variety of settings and environments that are all well-designed and enjoyable to explore. A standout feature of the game is the character art, which is both adorable in-game and in dialogue boxes. The latter has more depth, which raises the amount of characterization. The claimed recollections of suspects who are providing their version of events are shown in black and white, giving them a slightly ethereal feel and assisting in differentiating them from current events.

There is a lot of variety in the music, from the mellow menu track with sinister overtones and a detective noir atmosphere to the dramatic organ or amusing harpsichord playing inside the castle. The usage of the soundtrack to evoke diverse moods and fully immerse the player in each scene is well-executed and successful.
