REVIEW : NAIR (PC)

NAIR is a fast-paced game featuring rich, expressive ground mobility akin to platform fighters, as well as a powerful, air-only assault with several uses. Every hit you land heals your character, creating a unique tug-of-war health system that allows for last-second victories. Sharpen your platform fighter basics or have a good time in one of the most ridiculous fighters ever created.

But first, the good news: this game is incredible. I really enjoy the gameplay; I’ve heard that this is the footsies of the platform fighting genre, yet nothing could be farther from the reality. I discovered that placing oneself to take advantage of the little disconnect behind you in Nair’s hitbox is a very engaging game with a surprising amount of depth. Movement is unexpectedly enjoyable since it compels you to think about where you’re going or you’ll face the agony of sliding ahead while attempting to get back.

Now, let’s get to the point: controls. I tried using a controller and it worked fine, then my cord broke and now it disconnects randomly for whatever game I use it on, so I tried using the keyboard. But something doesn’t feel right; I keep wanting to tap up to leap or attack with z, which makes my movement feel much worse. It would be wonderful if there was a method to change controls from the menu, and if there is a method to do this through steam itself (with digging further into code or app-data because I don’t want to keep setting and resetting), please let me know so I can delete this piece. Overall 9/10 game with controls configs (or me not being a fool) 10/10 game.

REVIEW : NAIR (PC)

Nair is to platform fighters what Footsies is to conventional fighters, and that’s something I enjoy. Obviously, this goes against the whole premise, but I’d definitely get a lot more use out of this game as a means to practise plat fighters whether there is some type of anti-air attack, even if it was simply a high-impact jab. With four distinct attacks, Footsies emulates fighting game neutral in its most basic form; I don’t believe it would be too much of a stretch for Nair to add at least 1-2 additional attacks or mechanisms to build a more fleshed-out (and realistic to other plat fighters) rps system. This is a fantastic, basic, and easy-to-learn game. The one-button mechanism adds to the enjoyment and makes it simple to invite people who don’t want to master a million different button combinations.
