REVIEW : SENSEs: Midnight (PS5)

SENSEs: Midnight, the latest offering from SUZAKU Games and published by Eastasiasoft Limited, is a survival horror game that attempts to recapture the magic of classic titles in the genre. However, despite its promising premise and potential, it falls short in execution and leaves much to be desired.

The game’s protagonist, Uesugi Kaho, is an occult researcher who embarks on a journey to uncover the secret of the “Midnight Door” while navigating the haunted Ikebukuro Walking Park. The premise is intriguing and promises an exciting adventure. However, the execution is where the game falters.

The transition from 2D to 3D appears to have been a challenging one for the developers. The fixed camera angles, while intended to evoke nostalgia for classic survival horror games, often result in frustrating gameplay. The controls are also less than impressive and can detract from the overall gaming experience.

The game’s stealth mechanics are another area of concern. They are poorly implemented and often result in a lackluster gaming experience. The narrative, too, is shallow and fails to engage the player on a deeper level.

Despite these shortcomings, SENSEs: Midnight does have its redeeming qualities. The puzzles are well-crafted and add an element of intrigue to the game. The thrill of being chased by ghosts, despite their predictable routines, does manage to keep the player on their toes.

REVIEW : SENSEs: Midnight (PS5)

In conclusion, SENSEs: Midnight had the potential to be a standout title in the survival horror genre. However, it seems to have taken a step back from its predecessor, Sense: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story. With its challenging camera angles, subpar controls, and lackluster narrative, it fails to deliver a satisfying gaming experience. However, there is room for improvement and one can only hope that future titles in the SENSE anthology will learn from these missteps.
