REVIEW : The Knight Witch (PC)

the game, you take on the role of Rayne, a knight witch in training who resides in Dungeonidas, an underground city that serves as the final stronghold of several races after a devastating war brought on by the Daigadai family was finally put an end by a group of witches known as the Knight Witches, led by a woman by the name of Robyn.

REVIEW : The Knight Witch (PC)

Golems that took part in the battle against the Daigadai family assaulted the city as it celebrates the day the war came to an end. For an unknown reason, the golems start capturing everyone and putting them in cages.

Rayne begins her adventure in defending the city from these mysterious invaders while doing her best to keep the power of linking under control to ensure the Knight Witches maintain their abilities to preserve Dungeonidas while the Knight Witches are occupied trying to stop the invasion. Rayne uses her old spell cards as well as new ones that she finds on her journey.

As you spend time flying through the skies of Dungeonidas and eliminating golems that stand in your way, Knight Witch plays like a bullet-on-rails shooter. Instead of blasting foes till you reach the end of level monster and evading bullets in the process, you’ll spend time travelling across the open world’s maze-like levels and attempting to fulfil your objective.

REVIEW : The Knight Witch (PC)

Rayne fires magical light bullets at the opposition as your main defence. If a target is destroyed, she can fire anywhere or lock onto it and assault it until it is gone, at which point she goes on to the next one in the vicinity. Additionally, she has spell cards as a secondary power that will give her advantages in some of the more perilous battles she will encounter on her travels, such as an unexpected ambush that locks her in space until she destroys all the Golems or a brutal boss fight where she runs the risk of dying and necessitating a new battle.

These spell cards can be used to conjure swords to deal more damage to a group of foes or explosives that Reyne can lay in the air to detonate on the foes. A shield card can also be used to defend Rayne from incoming attacks from a certain direction.

During gaming, three of your initial magic cards will emerge in a random arrangement; however, whenever you come across an arcane beacon, you can add new spell cards to your collection that you can use later. Mana, which you can acquire when you get to these beacons, is used to power these spell cards as well. These beacons can also be utilised to transport Rayne to a resting spot where she can reflect on her journey’s progress or to a training palace where she can practise her new spell card skills.

The open-world area is large and occasionally complex, which can lead to players getting confused about where they should go. Fortunately, the player can use a mystical gust of wind to guide them toward their goal. However, occasionally the wind gust will point in a direction that the player can’t go because it will be blocked off, which will make them frustrated with how difficult it is to reach their goal and force them to resort to finding an alternative path without having to use a mechanic that is supposed to lead them to continue the story.

REVIEW : The Knight Witch (PC)

The levelling mechanism for the Knight Witches is based on how many people have faith in them. Reyne will continue to build links as she progresses through her trip, increasing either her spell damage or bullet attack power as she levels up.

Later, Reyne can make public statements all across Dungeonidas, which will give her a variety of chat options and a specific number of links to help her level up. Players occasionally come across green shards that they can deliver to Skeletons. The Skeletons require the shards to make their furnaces bright enough to offer Rayne some armour that will give her a temporary health boost or food that she can eat to cure herself from injury, therefore they aren’t used to pay for goods. Instead, they use them to give Rayne temporary health boosts. Additionally, Reyne can locate armour magazines that will enable her to create new armour.

Along with the skeleton NPCs she can encounter, Rayne can purchase magic cards from Madame Paquita, a potion maker, or from Lord Yupi and his wicked pet snake Sigurd, who will sell her a random set of cards. Reyne must pay Yupi with a set number of coins known as Yupi coins in order to obtain the cards, some of which may or may not be beneficial.

They are also floating mana stones that Rayne will find during her journey to use her spell cards without the risk of losing mana, as the stones give Reyne an unlimited amount of mana that she can use to test out her new powers. For a more permanent boost of health, Rayne can find seeds throughout her journey that will give her a permanent heart or more mana that she can store for her spell cards. However, they are accustomed to resolving puzzles in the vicinity, such as opening a door or obtaining a player-wanted object.

Some items are inaccessible no matter what you do until you obtain the necessary power later, in which case you will need to go back and retrieve the item.

The more admirable aspects of Knight Witch are its lovely and bouncy 2D art style, which gives the game the fantastical vibe it’s attempting to convey and brings to life each character, including Reyne, her husband Akai, and the Dungeonidas inhabitants. Each scene’s soundtrack also aids in setting the mood, and the location where Reyne flies will make players want to return to the game later on just to hear more of the music.

REVIEW : The Knight Witch (PC)

Although Knight Witch begins as a simple flying adventure, you’ll shortly run into challenging bosses and adversaries. For those unfamiliar with bullet shooters, it won’t be shocking if you lose when taking down a boss for the first time.

review-the-knight-witch-pcThe Knight Witch is an excellent way to kill some time when you're not busy and for fans of on-rail arcade shooters, despite its surprising difficulty jumps at specific periods in the tale or when battling bosses. It's enjoyable to push yourself as you try to knock down the monsters and Golems by dodging their bullets.
